I think your boss has some of his day care clients excrement for brains. There is nothing in a modern air conditioning unit that is explosive. Even the gas cannot explode and it's not even toxic.
Doors open, doors closed, hot day or cold, you are perfectly safe to run it.
He's just too cheap to air condition your workplace.

If I was you, I'd ask him for an explanation...
Ask him if the air conditioner runs on nitroglycerine... Haha!
Your boss sounds like an idiot.

        Get a few laughs.

But no, aircons don't explode. There is nothing that would (normally) make one blow up.

        • Well he said something about if the windows r left open while its on it can cause a back draft ( something along those lines) and thats y u shouldnt have air con on in the car if ur windows are slightly down. Basically thats risky to apparently 0.o

Nope. It isn't. In a car having the aircon on and the windows open (regardless of how open), means you burn more fuel... That's it!
If it's a company car, it's a good lie in order to discourage aircon usage and reduce fuel expenses slightly.
I can see a back draft being somewhat of a problem on a very large building with massive open spaces, like the Burj al alrab in Dubai, but in a normal building, or a car - rubbish!
But even in large buildings, the only back raft issue is that doors and windows are harder to open. That's why they have revolving doors and electric windows.
Air conditioners are made from durable materials, not cheese and don't blow up. Is your boss Michael Bay? XD
Cause he seems to have an explosion fetish - haha!

If you want to learn a bit more about the air conditioner, it's basically a set of fans and a series of pipes.
Aircons can be a single unit, or a two-piece set up.
It has an interior and exterior side. For example, the blower in the room and the box outside on your balcony.

The air conditioner sucks in hot air from the room, drives that through the set of pipes. The pipes have a coolant running through them. The air gets cooled and blow back in the room.
The (now) warm coolant goes to the exterior side of the aircon through another set of pipes. A fan then drives outside air through the pipes to cool down the coolant.
            Process repeats...
There are more parts, but in essence this is how it works.

Generally, you close the windows when a/c is on, because it stops the cooled air escaping...I thought that was basic knowledge.

If not properly installed to vent, the unit can overheat and break. I thought that was basic knowledge, too...
