Is it normal that my mind goes into autopilot while driving?

Sometimes when I'm driving, especially long distances, I tend to go into a daze of sorts, and I'm like on autopilot, and every once in a while I have to say "whoa! Where the hell am I?" And I really have to stop and figure out where I am and where I'm going and what mile markers, roads, etc have I already passed. Did I already pass my destination, or didn't I get there yet?

Happens to me pretty often too but I don't travel more that 25 miles usually and still I'll be like where the hell am I ?! A few times I passed my destination, that makes it more confusing. But I always know where I am, even if I temporarily don't, it just takes a second for reality to kick back in.

Just set a GPS to your destination and follow the stripe. You'll get to your destination in a daze. Problem solved.

  • Im pretty sure most people do this. I do it while walking too. Sort of like going into a hypnotic trance to make time go by quicker. I tend to snap out of it if someone talks to me or something unexpected happens.

I don't think I would do that walking because walking takes more energy and I would be anxious to arrive at my destination so I could quit walking, but driving is so easy.

iirc the term is called highway hypnosis. It happens to me only when driving familiar routes/highways though. makes you feel like a zombie.

My mind does that when I'm driving to places I haven't driven to in a while or when something is on my mind. I have to pull over, maybe get some food from a 7-11, and then try to wake my brain up so I can figure out where the hell I am and if I'm truly lost. That usually can take up to thirty minutes. If I don't have time to do that, I just keep driving and for the most part I'm usually able to get to where I need to go. I've been doing this a lot lately. lol

This is why women shouldn't be allowed to drive.
