Is it normal that my mom did this?

I did not say my teacher is "ugly". I just said no when my mom asked if I think my teacher is pretty. NOT the same thing as calling her ugly!

Yesterday, my mom saw my teacher. And my mom said something like "your teacher is hot. why did you tell me she is ugly?"

My mom literally said that at school. Anyone could have heard that. Yikes!

Is it normal for a mom to say that? it was kind of embarrassing.

That one hits close to home. My mom did something eerily similar when I was little.

I was in eighth grade with my teacher Ms... let's call her "Susan". Susan was reasonably attractive. She was in her early 40's and a bit out of shape, but she was prettier than the 70 year old crones that made up the rest of the staff.

One day I was at home, working on an assignment where I had to make a little drawing of a randomly-assigned person. My rotten luck got me my art teacher, one of the ancient crones. I was trying to be both respectful in my depiction of her and honest. Trying to make her look old but not - you know- OLD.

My mom took a look at my work and said "That's a really scary witch you got there, Donnie!". I told her it was supposed to be my art teacher. My mom kind of froze, let out a nervous giggle and asked me if I was doing that to be mean to her. I explained my situation and she seemed to understand, but didn't really believe me.

She mentioned that she'd seen my teacher and that she was pretty, not like some old witch. She was referring to Susan, the younger teacher, but I didn't correct her. Just kept working.

A few days later my mom went to pick me up from school. As we were leaving we run into the art teacher, who starts telling my mom how wonderful I am at drawing and how much she loved the drawing I made of her. My mom giggles and says how proud she is.

She should've kept quiet. Oh Lord, why couldn't she just have kept her mouth shut. She says "Oh, at first I thought Donnie here was drawing a mean old witch!" and starts laughing. The art teacher didn't find it very amusing. She gave my mom one of the filthiest looks I'd ever seen and said "Well, I've never!". Mom understood that she had screwed up, and being the wonderful socialite she is, tried to salvage it by making it worse.

"No no no no it's not like that! I just thought he was drawing you ugly on purpose to be mean! Not that you're ugly, but I just... he was... I thought he was drawing Ms Susan, you know? Susan! She-she doesn't look like that. No wrinkles and- not saying YOU have wrinkles, of course- but Susan is so smoking hot and you..."

She left it there and we nearly sprinted away.

Susan came over to our house a few times.

Didn't you know that there's a law which requires parents to regularly embarrass their offspring in public?

Your mom probably asked the question because she was curious about why you'd said what she understood you to say.

Not too sure why you found this embarrassing, but that's probably because I'm a father. The teenage brain is still developing and processes feelings of embarrassment differently than the adult brain.

If your mom had asked your teacher for a date in front of your class, I could understand you feeling awkward about that, but all she did was express an opinion, and I assume she didn't shout it down the corridor.

Don't worry about it. Unless you have a very peculiar collection of friends, they will also regularly feel embarrassed by their parents.
