Is it normal that one of my friends didn't know how a rotary phone works?

I was playing a game on the internet with some of my friends. We're all in the 20-22 age range. One of the minigames that popped-up required you to dial a number using a rotary phone as fast as possible. Well the thing is that one of my friends was absolutely clueless about how a rotary phone works. He became really furious about it and lost. Is this weird or not?

    And kids today can’t: do basic arithmetic without a calculator, find their way around by using a map, look up something in an encyclopedia or dictionary, recite poetry or Shakespeare, all things every kid used to be able to do.

      The only reason why I know how a rotary phone works is because my grandpa had one. For some people it's because they saw older movies with a rotary phone in them.

      I don't blame people for not knowing how outdated tech works because that's how time works.

        My grandpa had one as well. He also had a black and white TV i watched alot growing up. Those really were the good days man. Sometimes I wish we didnt get computers and shit im way too addicted.

        I only know because there used to be a shop on my town that still sold them, as a kid I would get told off for playing with them.

        One of my older colleges was boasting a while ago about how, “The last time I called in sick I called in on a rotary phone!”

      Well, I'm a gen z kid too, and so was my other friend, but we understood how it works.

    I choose to find that amusing, since the only alternative is to feel ancient.

    If you're at all interested in mechanical and electrical engineering, the way the old rotary phones work is kinda interesting. How many of them continued to function perfectly for decades says something about the design and production engineering of the time. The way pulse dial telephone exchanges operate is amazing. Listening and watching one of those in operation makes you wonder how the hell the system worked at all, with hundreds of stepping motors whirring and relay switches clattering away all over the place.
