Is it normal for somebody who professes to not believe in God, or heaven, would believe in hell? Isn't hell the opposite of heaven?
Is it really possible to believe in one but not the other? Is their a chink in their armor, or something?
Believe anything you want, anytime you want. It is a thought. At this time, on this planet, we do not have thought police. Believe anything you want. The moon is made of green cheese, anyway.
Yes you can believe in one but not the other. Many people of the Jewish faith believe in a heaven but not a hell. There are other faiths as well that believe in a positive afterlife of some sort but not a negitave one.
I have never personally met any of the people you speak of who believe in a hell but not a heaven. But believing in a bad afterlife but not a good one is just as valid as believing in a good one but not a bad one. I see no reason that a belief in one should require a belief in the other.
If someone wants to believe that when we die we spend eternity in agony, why not? There is exactly the same amount of evidence to support that idea as there is to support the idea that we spend eternity in harmony, zero.
Hell can be used to make a point even if one doesn't believe in it.
For instance one can say, "Gawd damn it to hell" when one has just bashed a finger with a hammer, and believe in neither gawd nor hell, but when's the last time you heard someone say, "Gawd damn it to heaven"?
