Is it normal that the only thing that matters to kids is studying and grades?

I live in a society where all day, everyday, kids, teens and young adults do nothing but study. If you're enrolled in any school at all, the only thing that matters is studying for a brighter future. With everyone being this competitive, the system had to get harder to the point there is no time to have fun. Parents only care about kids grades, and worry about them. God forbid they have fun and become deadbeats. It's as if everything revolves around studying, and for what? Most students aren't even sure. By that I mean they have no dream job as a goal, heck ask any kid what their dream is and you'll probably get a blank stare! Is this society messed up?

Well I see your point. Now people don't care about "dream job" if the pay is high. Now the term dream job is taken over by "money matters". They will sell their skills to anyone who is ready to pay them more. So they are studying harder. The higher their skill levels are the higher pay they will get. Highest paying job will be their dream job.
In a society like this, fun is just distraction from their work / skill development. The system did mess up. They are losing their health and social life. Material will matter more to them than people. In a society like this crime will increase. People will often deny to help and socially unconscious people will vote wrong people.
I will call you a hero of you try to improve your society. I wish you the best.

It is funny you called me a child and a hero in the same day (relating to another post you commented on today). I don't know where you are from but my society is becoming extremely materialistic. I can see it in the youth everyday. In contrast though there's a pretty low crime rate here. And well that's due to a mixture of our very short history and a very efficient government. I think this country is doing very decently in a materialistic sense, perhaps though I can see that there is a spiritual deficit. Some spark missing in the people's eyes here. Whatever it is we don't have much of an opposition to vote for in my country haha but I hope the education system will change over the next 20 years. Kids need dreams AND money to be really happy. At least that's my opinion.

I am glad to be able to comment on both of your posts. Yes of course a child can be a hero. It makes me happy to see people who really care and it's good to see your positive views.

Grades aren't the be all and end all of everything. Many successful people in the world did poorly in school. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try. It means you should put effort into your work, but have some common sense and learn to categorize important stuff from things that are not important. Life doesn't end for you if you get bad grades. If you're on your death bed, do you really want to reflect on your life and regret spending your childhood/teenagehood studying for tests instead of gaining life experiences? Besides, my teacher has even admitted to me that she even agrees the marks on your report card don't matter. It's the experiences that you gain and the level of responsibility, organization, independence and initiative in your life. A person who has really good grades could be a rude person to other people, but someone who has poor grades but cares about other people and is responsible and organizes is clearly better. Many employers take into consideration those things much more than your GPA or the marks you got in math and science.

Well duh. Haha well I don't know what it is like to be in the American education system but it seems like the complete opposite of mine. It would be interesting to compare the 2.

Yes. Especially when they have really strict, perfectionist parents.
