Is it normal that there is always someone better than you?

Hey I want advice. My parents told me they would buy me a ticket going to any country if I graduate as top of the class. I did get a high grade but it seems I can't beat one of the best students in our class. I was told earlier that I am the highest in our class but unfortunately our professor who already finished checking some term papers announced that I am now second. Now my self-esteem just went all low that I can't really do something I can be proud of. Idk I'm really competitive and it sucks losing all the time.

  • There is always going to be someone better than you it some way. If you're second best in the class, just know you're doing better than most people.

I'm in love with this quote right now:

"If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room."

My concern is that I am the smartest person in this room.

Well, considering we're not in a room, I'm not sure if the literal meaning applies.

Though, figuratively, I'm still not sure if it applies.

Try as hard as you can and do it for yourself. Your parents should be proud of what you do, they shouldn't be bringing anyone else into it and comparing. You need to live your life for yourself not for them, and when you understand that you will realise that's more valuable than some trip somewhere. When you go to university you can go on trips or spend a semester abroad and when you start your career you can afford a trip yourself, or go teach english in any country...Your parents have got it all wrong. It should be about you, no-one else.

Second best seems pretty fucking good!
I mean you're no winner but don't beat yourself up...

Remember that over several decades, he who finishes second place in everything, wins the race of life.

I think the best way for you to finish first is to kill the other guy. He will always be better than you because you are a whiney little prick. And eventually you will be third best. Then fourth. Then you will start shooting heroin in your arm because you can't cope with all the pressure. Then you will become a sex offender. Then you go to jail, and buddy, I promise you that you will be number one in your fellow inmates' hearts ;)

  • It sucks! This is going to sound really arrogant, but sometimes it doesn't help to focus on who is better than you. You can take the optimistic view and think, well look at all the people I am better than! Look at the person in third place and realize they are feeling what you feel.

And I wouldn't say anyone is better than *you*. They may be more proficient in skills you have, but they are not any better than you as a person.

I dunno. Shit happens. It's nice to be on top, but is it just me or does it kinda suck at the same time?

Don't give up, but if you still get bested, take pride in the fact that you tried your absolute best. There is no shame in that :)

There is ALWAYS going to be someone better than you. ALWAYS. That's life, get used to it.
Someone is always going to be smarter, faster, taller, shorter, bigger, nicer or meaner. You may not meet them, or compete with them, but they are there.
It would have been nice to win that trip, and being a bit depressed that you couldn't pull it off is natural, but come on, you did your best and should be really proud of what you did accomplish. Even at the top of your high school class, you will be just one of many when you get to college, so stop letting these things get to you or your life will be miserable.

Hello my friend, the answer is right in front of you, you are a spoilt little brat, go and work for some money of your own instead of sponging on your parents. Life is still going to teach you a lot of tough little lessons.

coming first is not everything its made out to be, just being able to survive in the concrete jungle is better!

    • How this got four thumbs up is beyond me. Someone offering you something is not being "spoilt", especially if there are conditions he must meet in order to get what is offered to them.

My good naive friend you are young, you have lived a sheltered life in your parents home, the right from wrong you know you learned from them.

To get good grades at school is the simplest of tasks in the world, all you need to do is pay attention in class whilst the teacher is rambling off and make some notes, the learning comes automatically during this process.

Bribing somebody to get good points does make Johnny a bright boy, or even one with ambition for that matter. This comes only through self discipline, something which you clearly lack.

Be a big boy and refuse your parents "offer" to pay for your flight to fuck nose where and tell them you want to get yourself a holiday job first and work for half of the money of the tickets. That will impress the shit out of them and I bet they will even "give" you some pocket money for the trip.

I do not want to burst your bubble or rain upon your parade, but yes Sir, your parents do spoil you. Accept it, build a bridge and get over it. Pull your head out of your arse and look the world straight in the face and say, "I can and will make a success of myself, without anybody`s help!".

No I am not a sex offender, I am simply someone who has years of experience in such matters and would like to share them with people who obviously need help!

Have a great day and an even better life!

if i was a spoiled little brat i should be the one obliging them to just literally give me that ticket. however, they offered me that thing, i didn't ask for it. i just somehow wanted to give it a try. but i am totally relieved with what you said on the very last part. thank you it's hard dealing with so much pressure.

I got the silver medal three fucking years in a row in the soccer championships here. Getting second ins frustrating as hell, but you can't look at it as losing. Lol even though I say that, it messed me up. Made me think there was always someone who was better too. You just gotta learn to give it your all no matter what. Your only true competition, is yourself.

But if there is always someone better, who's better than the person that's better? In the end, someone has to be the greatest.

I am amazed by the things other people can do that I cant do, like ppl who are really good at maths. I got an A in the gcses which was fine for me, but I don't have the amazing natural ability like others do and I'm glad, it means I can be mystified by them and learn from them as reminiscent said.
