Is it normal the customers at my job try to buy me things?

Today at work a young woman offered to buy me a friggin TV just because I listened to her problems.

Before that, it was an old guy that I chatted with and afterwards he offered to buy me groceries.

Before that, it was a young woman who offered to buy me a few video games after chatting with her.

And before that, it was a really young guy that offered to buy me some chocolates.

There are twelve more examples, but these were the ones that happened between March and now.

Each time I turned down the free stuff.

Is it normal?

    Fuck yeah. At my last job a lot of old men would bring us home made food. Rednecks love to cook. And during the holidays, I always get extra cash from customers or presents.

      That's pretty cool that they made you home cooked meals. Customers always just offered to buy me stuff from the store. A home cooked meal sounds way better.

          I'm always wary of accepting free stuff. I'm worried that they'd eventually think I owe them something or they'd get the wrong idea. Yet for some reason I'd have no problem taking home cooked food. Free salsa and desserts is a good deal. I wish I was offered that. 😋

    I get this too. Just smiling, chatting and being genuine in average conversation is so appealing to people. They want to reward your behavior. Except those that your gut tells you they are looking to buy you. You can always feel that. I worked in the food industry. People are sooooo tired of hate and rudeness that people with a kind soul or empathic nature are a beacon of light to them. Take what is offered when you feel it's appropriate. It's normal for people to appreciate goodness in others.

    A TV just for listening to problems? Does that woman realise therapists exist?

    Small gifts are normal, I got a packet of ginger biscuits once myself, but I see why you are turning down expensive stuff. Like you I wouldn’t want people to start thinking I owe them anything because they bought me things.

    Do you live in a wealthy area?

    You should tell them that there is no need for them to buy stuff for you, in my personal view it sounds a bit creepy.

      It can be creepy. Some of these people did have ulterior motives.

      There used to be a gay club near my job and we'd get gay, bi, and curious chicks coming around. Last year, it seemed like some of them somehow honed in on my bisexuality and would not leave me alone. It mostly stopped after covid killed the nightclub.

      Then there were the older gentleman. I had no interest in them either. My lady coworkers told me I should do what they did and date an older man for his cash, but it just wasn't something I wanted to do.
