Is it normal this realization makes me feel old?

So I was born in 1999, so obviously I wasn’t around during the latter half of the 20th Century. However, its dawned on me just how old a lot of things I like will be some day. I can think of things from 1960 onwards as “old school”, but I can’t imagine them being ancient, but some day they will be. If I live long enough, I can be around for The Beatles’ 100th anniversary! And that’s just one 100 anniversary of many!

I think it might have to do with rock n roll music. For example: in the 1950s Elvis came on to the scene, and they had to film him from the waste up because of how shocking his dancing was for the time. I wasn’t around back then, but it’s hard for me to imagine anyone before the 1950s being energetic, so I associate older things with a slow pace. Maybe I’m wrong, and people in real life weren’t that much different from today, but in any movie or song or show I’ve seen from that time, that’s the impression I get.

So the realization that not only the things I mentioned, but pretty much every modern trend will not only be old some day, but ANCIENT, is mind boggling! Can you imagine future generations considering the internet an ancient technology, or even my own generation considering previous decades ancient? Hell, the 70s are already almost 50 years old! Maybe it’s just because I’m more into stuff from back then than stuff from today, but this is hard for me to grasp!

Feeling old at 20 is normal but not rational. You seem to be fixated on the past whilst viewing the present through a “future lense” as though you’re looking back at it.

Yes, one day all this around us will be history, Ariana Grande will be middle aged, the big social media platforms will be obsolete, all the politicians we worship and scorn will be dead. But it makes no sense for you to feel old about that NOW - none of it has happened yet. Enjoy the present moment, see it as something you can change, not just as a trudge toward the future and old age. That way at least when you do get old you should have some good stories to tell Those Damn Kids.

I have often thought that people under 50 just don't have a mind for historical perspective. They can memorize historical facts, but don't sense the rate at which sensibilities and social tolerances change. For 20 years old, you are way ahead of schedule. You realize that grasping these things not only depends on your own life experience, but on society's aggregate reaction to its own progress. Nice to see young people like you on the path to early acquisition of wisdom.

I thought it was crazy when someone told me that all 1990 babies were grown up and 18. I was so sad about it.
