Is it normal to accidently hold the bathroom door open to the wrong gender?

Sometimes when I leave a public bathroom I see someone heading towards me and I am so deep in thought that I just instinctually hold the door for them. Then I notice that they are not a guy and quickly leave the situation. I have never gotten an awkward conversation out of this, but I definitely feel awkward afterwards. Does anyone else do this?

Once when I was 18 me and my bro-in-law stopped at a bar in the middle of nowhere in the desert. I went to the bathroom. I went into the ladies room by mistake. There was a 40 ish woman sitting on the head. I said sorry. She said no problem and started talking. I talked to her for a min. and she said you better go my husband may need to come back here too. I went to the men's room. When I came out she was in the bar. She smiled at me. I felt extremely stupid. I have never opened a RR door for a woman except my wife.

I couldn't imagine being so out of touch with reality that I can't tell a man from a woman, in this context anyway.
