Is it normal to avoid telling landlord about problems?

Based on my past experiences with informing him about problems I have not told him that the range burnt up and no longer works. By burnt up I mean the element fried and rendered the oven inoperable and I tried to only use the cooktop but it was making popping and snapping noises which I figure are electrical problems so I unplugged it for good. The last time I told him about a drain problem and he came over, dug a trench in the yard and left and I had to fill the trench back in and fix the drain probem! He did nothing but create more work! There is plants growing in the gutters too and he doesn't care. Animals get up under the roof because of the gutters being weighted down from the plants leaves a gap. I pay my rent every month still though. I feel really used by him honestly. I have fixed so much stuff but he doesn't appreciate it. What should I do for revenge?

You need to give him notice that you are leaving asap and find a new location to live. It is his responsibility to look after his property if you are renting it from him

You need to propose some rent reduction to cover what you've spent. Show him receipts and other evidence to hopefully prick his conscience (if he has one!).

    • I have but he deflects. Talking to him is aggrivating because he steers conversation whatever way he wants. It's virtually impossible to convey my concerns to him. When I told him about the gutters he said well you just have to buy some long bolts and put it back up. I even asked to borrow his ladder so I could fix it but it has been a year and he hasn't brought the ladder by. I think revenge is the right move here because I'm never going to get anything out of him otherwise.

You should still tell him and have proof because you don't want to risk him keeping your security deposit.

Why the fuck would you stay?

    • I like the area and there's nowhere else to go thats anywhere remotely comparable for price, space and pet friendly.

    • That's a really stupid question by the way. Almost anyone who stays in a shitty situation has compelling reason to. If it was so simple to change it then nobody would be in a bad spot ever.

You must be new to this site.

Additionally, the fact that you think "revenge" is the best solution, doesn't exactly paint you as the sharpest tool in the shed.

I cannot imagine a situation desperate enough to stay in a death trap.

But what would I know? Apparently, I'm the one asking a dumb question here.

        • Also as I said I unplugged the range so that particular thing is not a "death trap" anymore. I don't want to tell him about it because instead of getting a new range I'm sure he will just try to replace the element but since I heard the popping noises with it plugged in I don't think that is a good idea.

        • I'm glad you're privileged enough to pick and choose and have everything your way all the time but some people don't have that luxury. Re: revenge, welp, it's all I have. So maybe your question wasn't so dumb but rather asked from a place of privilege where you just don't know any better. It's one or the other. It most definitely is not a question asked with any empathy or tough world experience.

Perhaps you could be asking about your legal rights and avenues, instead of, being an idiot and, presumably, being a troll.

            • I already know my legal rights hence why I don't ask about that. Non-privileged people such as myself know that legal rights don't matter so much when you're caught by the balls so to speak. I'm glad you are privileged enough to be shielded from this reality but since you clearly are too out of touch to offer any real help I'd suggest you get on your bike.
