Is it normal to be a bit of a "weeaboo" or "otaku"

I love Japanese culture. The whole aesthetic of 80s Japanese music and modern anime and JRPGs like Persona and Tales of. Is that okay? I would never move to Japan I don't think think I'm obsessive over this stuff. I don't speak Japanese unironically and I don't watch anime religiously. Yet it seems like these things are the only thing I like. I can't help but to get invested in Japanese things. Should I be more American? Or is it ok to be invested in a culture to this extent?

No human being should aspire to being more American.

As long as your dont start wearing that stupid naruto headband in public or pretend you're a nip there's nothing wrong with it. Japanese stuff is weird in a fun way and there's no reason to not enjoy it.

Yes you're normal. I'm otaku myself. I never heard of the word Weeaboo, nor know the meaning of it, the one I have encounter uses the word in a prejudice way. Now the word is not a real word, but in Internet slang it means anyone who likes Anime, or 2nd meaning really obsessive with anime, and Japan that you abandon your own culture. Now the 2nd meaning is really prejudice appalling idea of liking an object more means you're the worst person ever. Which I don't agree with, if you like a culture more than your own culture I don't give a care. If you're happy i'm happy.

The problem isn't being passionate about a culture, but about something you consume. In your case, it's Japanese media. The reason why geeks tend to be so bitter and self-loathing is because ultimately, what you consume (videogames, anime, and so on) doesn't fulfill you.

Moderate your consumption and focus your energy on creating things and improving yourself. You'll like yourself more.
