Is it normal to be a furry, but only for the art and not the sexual fetish?

Is it even a thing to be a furry that's not too into the sexual stuff? I like the whole persona(fursona) concept, and being able to artistically represent the animal-side of you. I created one for myself, a lion to suit both my astrological sign, and my personality. I'm not so much into the furry sex though.

The variation with the costume sex freaks me out, and seeing pictures of furry females splayed out makes me feel as if someone did something horrible to something that could have been beautiful.

Maybe I'm not even technically a furry according to the rest of the interwebs, feel free to comment with your opinions on the matter.

Ok, I'm going to give you my two cents on what I know about your dilemma.

-Yes, it's a thing to be a furry without sexual desires. It's like watching regular anime versus hentai.

-What people do not understand is that the furry fandom has its own distinguishable sexual category (like the hentai side of anime) called yiff. Being a "furry" doesn't mean you are into yiff, although there are a lot that are sadly (I'd say it's more common than anime watchers, but I don't know the statistics.) Refer to Internet Rule 34.

-Don't worry about costume sexuality. You don't need to have a costume to be a furry, and you definitely don't need costumes to have sex and still call yourself furry! Again, refer to Internet Rule 34.

-On the other hand, yiff (furry porn) is a painfully present flaw in the community, and personally from what i see there's a 60/40 ratio between 100% clean work and all work that is questionable or worse.

-Being a furry can be defined with a few statements.
--A furry is a person who, in some way or form, has in possession or has a desire for a character that is any mix of animal and human (even if only human intelligence) and adopts said character as a persona (known as a "fursona" in that community.)
--Generally a "furry" will desire to be said persona in some shape or form.
--You don't have to have a specific persona in mind as long as you want one, but obtaining a persona for the furry fandom is the generally accepted line between furry and non-furry.

    Hope this helps!

I watched a short, sympathetic, documentary film about furries once. About 30 minutes long. It was mostly set at a furry convention. I can't remember what it was called or I'd link it for you. It wasn't terribly well made, but it made me think that most furries are just normal people who have a nerdy interest or a hobby that no-one outside that community understands.

People do it for escapism, as a creative outlet and for the community. A lot of the people in the film gave me the impression of being disconnected from "mainstream society" and adopted the culture of the furry community because they felt it was more accepting of them. Some people do it for sexual reasons, but I think those people are the minority and there's nothing wrong with it per se.

For some of them, fursuiting was only a small part of their life. For others it was a pretty big part of it.

EDIT: The film was called "Furries: An Inside Look". You can find it on YouTube uploaded in parts, if anyone's interested.

  • The stereotype that furries are all perverts is not always true but it is for about half of them.

I'm a furry and do it for different reasons than most of them. For me it started as a Halloween costume that continued after Halloween and I kept using the character for other things such as playing on stage with my band, volunteering at places, and where ever else I feel like wearing the costume. I even went to jury duty as a furry and was kicked out. It's a lot of entertainment for me but I don't consider it a fetish at all. I do think neko girls are hot but I have no desire to fuck a mascot. I have been to a furry convention and the people there had quite an assortment of reasons for doing it.

Thank you for the insight, mate. I knew there where variations of the furry community but some things I wasn't quite sure about and I've always been a little reluctant in reaching out to other furries less they be into the stuff that I'm not comfortable with. That's a funny one about the jury duty though, gave me a laugh.

That's a really interesting thing about you. I like how you mentioned furries have different reasons for doing what they do. I'm not a furry but can respect the lifestyle. Also I think that's pretty funny to wear the suit to jury duty, haha.
