Is it normal to be afraid of butterflies?

When I was around 10, my dad took me to a butterfly park, a place where there are a shit load of butterflies flying around you in circles, brr.

Anyways, when we went in it everything was normal, like looking around the place, chasing a butterfly here and there. Then suddenly I get surrounded by so many butterflies that I start crying. Ever since that day, I can't go near butterflies. Nothing else scares me except butterflies. Is it normal? What do I do?

You are right, most people tend to be intolerant.

      • I had to google that word, but no, she said it was because they flutter unpredictably.

Your phobia is actually pretty normal. There are adults older than me in this town that fear them. Unfortunately, some of these idiot neighbors kill the butterflies that wind up in their yards.

Actually that's normal because if you're afraid of butterflies you're probably afraid of spiders. Well I have that too. Welcome to the club. ;)

Maybe it could help if you went to a quite park where you now you will find only some (I mean like normal amount of ramdom) butterflies here and there and try to just be there until you don't even mind that they are around...
Go with someone you trust and that takes your fear seriously, so they can calm you down in case you panic.

I have two friends who fear birds, by the way.
I'm totally terrified of flying roaches.

When I was a little girl I used to carry bugs around like they were my little pals. Grasshoppers were some of my favorites!

I's normal. I think it's because of the stressful experience you had when you where younger, it's like traumatic stress. Every time you see a butterfly you react the way you felt about butterflies that day. I'm extremely afraid of frogs and toads, 'cause as a kid I was scared by a sudden appearance of a toad twice. It's so stupid but whenever I walk somewhere and I see a toad my heart jumps to my throat and I want to cry.

Every summer I try to get rid of it by just looking at a toad for a long, long time, see how it moves, tell myself again and again and again (mantra-like, like: i'm not afraid of toads and frogs, i'm not afraid of toads in frogs.)That always works a bit, but I have to keep doing it, otherwise my fear returns. There are methods to get rid of fears like this, though, I just never had the time/focus to get to know them.

Do you think they will suck out your essence with that little spiral of doom that was designed solely for that purpose?

No no, not scary. They are magnificent creatures who transcend your human capabilities infinitely, and in such a relatively short period of time. Metamorphosis and shit, yo! From a cute caterpillar who weaves it's cocoon around itself, sorta like how I snuggle in my blankies, then it turns to goo before emerging a delicate sucker of souls, I mean nectar, gracing the skies for your people's eyes. I hope I don't miss the migration this year! Eek!! I want butterfly kisses!!!

That would be awesome. I was driving down a coastal road a few years ago and there were Monarchs everywhere. It was amazing. They were on their way to Mexico and I was part of their mass migration for a few miles. It was a special moment.
