Is it normal to be afraid when people point things at you

Ok, I grew up around guns and even went to shooting ranges and I have gone hunting plenty of times. I went through gun saftey courses and the whole thing. But recently, I have discovered that when people point things at me, even if I know they can't hurt me (like a plastic gun) I still panic and have small anxiety attacks. I have never had a scary experience with a gun or anything, so it's not a PTSD thing.

It's just a reflex. You've seen firsthand what that kind of gun-pointing can lead to, and so you're more sensitive to it. "Once bitten, twice shy." But you should try and find a mental way to get around that irrational reflex, because you're gonna be looking like a pussy if you keep getting startled at people pointing at stuff.

It's odd. On the plus side, it seems only mildly inconveniencing. I would see if you can come up with tactics to work through it. I would recommend looking up exposure therapy. I think the transferable skills could well work in this case. Pick a couple of friends to purposely expose you to it, and, I reckon, over time it'll probably sort itself out, or at least become less pronounced.

  • Completely normal, because you grew up around guns your brain relates things that point at you as a threat.

It's your brains self-defence mechnism briefly kicking in (that's the anxiety), what it does is it raises your adrenaline BEFORE it identifies if it is a threat... It does this because the brain is proactive not reactive.

So the "things" are just guns? Isn't everyone afraid when a gun is pointed at you?

no like squirt guns, sometimes even just plastic ones, and occasionally, even when people just simply point at me with like a stick.

Hahaha my dog is the same way!

Seriously though, you shouldn't think of PTSD as something that you only get if you've experienced "x" level of serious trauma. Idk if this would class as PTSD, but it sounds like you've been taught over & over, conditioned to think, that shit pointing at you is very, very, very bad & very dangerous. I'm sure you probably got straight up YELLED AT by shooting range instructors, because they take that job pretty seriously. Given that, what you are feeling is perfectly normal. I DO think you should try to take some steps to conquer your phobia, though.
