I was always completely terrified of surgery. I stopped going to the dentist for a few years because they wanted me to have my wisdom teeth surgically removed as a preventative measure. Luckily, I have fucking good teeth, apparently, and my wisdom teeth got their shit together.
The idea of someone else making me unconcious for however long was what scared me.
I had to have emergency surgery three (?) years ago, and while I was still anxious about it, I found that, for me, the pain distracted me from most of the anxiety while waiting to go in. The agony of the non stop puking after is now what I worry about if I had to have surgery again :/
I think, like most things, it's thr anticipating that kills you. It's normal to be anxious about surgery, because it's a serious and daunting thing. If you find the anxiety overwhelming, tell your doctor. I'm sure they're used to dealing with patients who have anxiety about surgery.
Its related to fear of death. I would assume that its pretty common. I have underwent two surgeries and ive overcome my fear.
I get nervous and anxious about anything along the lines of doctors. Even if it's something minor, I start sweating and not listening properly if I stay in a doctors office for too long.
