Is it normal to be infatuated with something i fear?

The ocean. I have had numerous occasions of nearly drowning in the ocean and on top of that, I can't swim. This lead to my fear of deep waters and the ocean. However, I love the ocean. I love the sounds, the breeze, the waves, the rippling glimmers along the surface, everything. I could go all Edgar Allen Poe about it, but I'd rather get to the point. Is it normal to love something you fear?

  • It's a shame, isn't it? I love the ocean, too, but being in it scares the heck out of me. Although, like you said, the sounds and smells of the sea are so relaxing. It could be that because you're so deathly afraid of it that the thrill of said fear calms and satisfies you. Whatever the case, you're normal. Interesting question.

Yes, I'm like this with heights. I become fascinated at how high up I am and start thinking "what if I jumped off?"...I wouldn't ever. But I tend to find things I'm afraid of fascinating.

Its funny, when I was a kid I used to be terrified when I saw a spider, yet when I was a safe distance from them, I talked to them. (I was like 4 here) So I'll say yes. Its a weird oxymoron but, oddly enough, yes it is normal.

Unlike Cobra, your fear/ obsession is about something tangible. I've had similar experiences. I was in L.A. on vacation & got washed off the beach by a wave when I was 5. Scared the hell outta me. a couple of yrs ago, some friends took me out on a boat about 3 miles from shore in FLA. That scared me too,(ocean is BIG). I love the ocean/beach, but I grew up in the desert, so I was not used to the water. After FLA, I swam in the Persian Gulf. Now I live on an island in the the Pacific Ocean. Go figure. Conquering ones fears isn't easy, but it can be done. You have to stronger than your fears. In your case, you should take some precautions. First, I would suggest learning how to swim to build your confidence, (also so you don't drown). The ocean is an awesome, beautiful, & dangerous force of nature that demands respect. Always go w/friends. It's safer & they can provide much needed support. Don't let it get you down when you don't succeed. This will take a while & several attempts. Don't get discouraged. Hope this helped.
