Is it normal to be refused business on this basis

The other day, I needed to have a tire replaced on my car. I told them what happened and then begin to ask for my phone number, address, name, etc. I asked them politely what that information is used for being I will wait when the job was done and not going anywhere. They said, "We have to have it!" Well I refused to give them my information and then they told me to go somewhere else. I find this unnerving that almost every business wants to do this. Why do they feel its their business to get this information if I am paying CASH and may not show up ever again to that client site? Does anyone feel irritated when a company demands for your personal information?

I get annoyed to. Especially when they ask for my email address. I give them my ditzy female look and say "I don't have an email address?" They just want it to spam that shit up. I even get spammed from applying places! I applied at Walmart a year or so ago and I STILL get emails DAILY from them. It's all just SPAM! And I didn't even get the job..yeesh

If it is policy, and you weren't talking to the sole proprietor, they probably had no choice but to deny you.

Should of asked for the manager. Or at least gotten an explanation of why that is the policy. In the future give them fake info if they demand it

people need to realise that even when these places send you emails that , they can use this info to access & misuse your info & hack your email in order to do so .

Yes i agree totally .. Just because they are a business .. Doesn't mean they aren't as shady as other people in general i mean .. How many people here have been ripped off/scammed by a so called business .. I'm willing to bet quite a few .. !

you'd be suprised what criminals can do with something as seemingly simple as your name , address & telephone number .. it would boggle your mind but personally , i wouldn't give my address .. they can't demand that essentially unless they were going to deliver your car to your house or something !

    • I agree and businesses always say the same brainwashed phrase, "It's for your own security." Ironic that nothing could be further from the truth.

If you have such a problem with giving your address, or whatever, just make up one. Duh!

It's so that when the company pays their tax they can if needed prove where they recieved all of their money from. It probably helps stop things like money laundering as well.

They want to be paid. People and insurance companies take turns shafting repair men so they cover their ass by gathering these details first. If it is a big deal, pay first.

Sadly, this is normal in the industry. But it's also normal for people to simply not pay their bills.

    • I offered that and yes I was still refused service. I think this is some sort of nonsense idea in someone's head to view nosiness as being normal.

Why are so shady about this business anyways? This is a business not some random dude on the internet. Do you have some sort of mental disorder or are you just in some bad business? They did not ask your social security. I would expect them to ask this type of information. It is not them being nosy. I think they would ask your name for if they need to call or tell you when the care is done. Plus if they do not know your name how do they address you?
