Is it normal to be scared to talk to someone who thinks positively of you?

For instance, if a girl tells me she thinks I'm a cool guy, I'll avoid talking to or hanging out with her because I'm scared I'll say something stupid that will cause her to change her mind, but if a girl outright hates me, I'll be more socially confident because she already hates me and I figure there's nothing to lose. It's an instinct of mine that I can't control, even though I know it's counterproductive. Is it normal?

It's normal, but you're correct in saying it's counterproductive: if you don't change this you're going to end up keeping company with people who aren't interested in you and what's the point of that?

Learn how to take a genuine interest when they talk about themselves. They will think you are a master conversationalist.

    I think that's normal.

Oftentimes, I have a quite low self-image. I find it hard to agree with people sometimes (to myself) if/when they speak positively of me.
