Is it normal to believe the "golden rule" promotes a sel-centered mindset?

I believe it takes an arrogant person to presume another has the same dispostions as you.

Under the golden rule it would be right to serve a vegetarian a steak or a paleo dieter cake. As a person that loves to have my girlfriend bite me--very hard-- it would be right for me to bite any future lovers because I enjoy it.

Is my reasoning normal?

Violation of rule 420. Which states: IIN is and shall remain a common sense free zone. I hereby issue you a $10 fine and sentence you to a public shaming of you having to kiss someone who's name starts with an R. You know who I mean.

Lol, that's okay. My name is a reference to the show King of the Hill. One of the characters on the show (Dale Gribble) uses the name 'Rusty Shackleford' as his alternate alias. :)

    • Why make a rule if it's common sense?

You are not very intelligent if you believe this. Not everyone thinks the same. If you like a person it does not mean they likes you. If you eat meat it does not mean they do. If you want sex it does not mean the other person is interested. If you try and share sex since they should want it you are a rapist. Do you see how horrible that is? If you believe this you are mentally unwell. You need to get therapy and realize you are not the only one in this world. The world was not invented to please you. People who think this way need some serious help.

        • Of course I don't belive in the golden rule. All you did hear is state exactly why the golden rule is flawed. You're right; I can't force my dispostions on other because of what i want. Thats my point, it's stupid, yet this is how people teach other to be kind to others. I also agree that people who treat the golden rule as some sort of moral law do need help.

          Breathe.

The 'rule' itself doesn't seem to be common sense to a lot of people. What I meant, though, was that it should be common sense that it means treat others with respect, as you would like to be treated with respect, rather than give people food that you like, because you like it so they must. Generally speaking, once people are above a certain age, they are able to ascertain that just because they have a like for something, it doesn't guarantee that EVERYONE will like the exact same thing.

You mean "treat others as you would have them treat you"?

I'm pretty you're only supposed to apply it if you don't know what the person wants already. Why would you need a rule if you already knew what the wanted, anyway? :P I think it's also meant to be used in more abstract and less specific terms, i.e. "treat others well".

Phrases like that never make sense if you try and take them too literally. Just step back and don't over-analyze them, and if you can't help but over-analyze then look at them laterally rather than literally.

I could walk up to a girl and pee on her leg. You're right that treat others as yourself crap just doesn't make sense at all.

That's why the Platinum Rule fits better in my opinion.

"Treat others as they would like to be treated."

Granted, it's necessary to follow the Golden Rule until you know the person enough to know what they want, but it does eliminate some of the drawbacks.

I think you are partially right. I've always empathised with others by imagining how I would feel in their situation, but recently I've come to realise that I would feel very different in someone else's place to how they feel in that place, because, you know, they aren't me.

That being said, I think the golden rule is meant to be a lot vaguer than that. Like, instead of "bite them because I would like them to bite me" it would be "treat them the way they would like to be treated in bed, because I would like them to treat me how I'd like, too".

I think you have too much time on your hands .. Lol ! Anyhow the "do unto others" rule as i'm aware .. was directed towards your behaviour towards others example .. if you choose to be good to others , it will be returned .. be an ass .. & it comes back around to you & so forth .. karma in other -
