Is it normal to call a 32 year old middle aged?

Well, IIN? My 32 year old friend was at a restaurant and he ordered wine. The waiter asked for his ID to check his birth year (my friend looks about 24). Then the man said, "sorry, just had to check sir. I see you're definitely not under 21 but I have to ID people who look under 25 as it's policy. Take that as a compliment because you look close to 21 but I can see your age. I'm sure a middle-aged man like yourself loves looking younger"

Since when is 32 middle-aged? Am I missing something? I thought middle age was MIDDLE aged. Is middle-aged 30+ and I was unaware/IIN? He's born in 1982.

Thanks in advance.

I hate waiters who make comments. They should just shut up and serve!

As for being middle-aged, I thought that was around 40...

It seems a rather unpolitic way of covering his embarrassment at carding a 32 year old man. I'm sure he just meant mature, which is the word he should have used.
If 32 is middle age then I must be dead already.

40 isn't even middle aged. 50s more like. The waiter was probably foreign and didn't understand the phrase. It's not exactly the middle of your life, it's when you turn into an old boot and have the same haircut as your husband.

Middle Aged?! The last time I checked, the thirties didn't equal "Middle Aged".

It wasn't polite for him to do that and 32 is certainly not middle-age. However, depending on how long people live individually, middle age will vary. Live to 60? 30 is middle age. Live to 80? 40 is middle age. Live to 50? 25 is middle age. It really depends.

Pshhh, you serious? Well, imo 20-30 is young adult, 30-40 mature person and 45-50 is middle-aged. I think he just wanted to give a compliment, what an awkward fag tho...

i thought you were supposed to divide 100 by 2 because that's the average age people are living up to these days. So I would say 50. I think they're confused with mid-life crisis which can happen even in your late 20's, right?

100 is not the "average" age people are living to! Even in wealthy developed countries it's much less than that.

You seem to have a problem with basic maths: how could a mid life crisis happen in anyone's 20's when that's not mid-life?

Yeah, most people I know of are still alive in their late 90s so if 30 is middle-aged, we're going backwards a couple hundred years.

Well maybe the waiter had a premonition that your friend would meet his demise at the age of 64...ya never know.
