Is it normal to collect trash and things people throw out?

Sometimes, I like to go through dumpsters and my neighbors' trash to see if they have anything I'd find interesting. Provided you don't bump into anything like racoons or stray cats (which would be cute, if they weren't so grungy), it can be pretty fun to see what people are throwing out and if it's something you can use, why not take it?

Last night's haul: half of a stale package of Oreo knockoffs, some more bottle caps for my collection, spare change (must have vacuumed under the couch and dumped without looking), and some jars.

I'd rather have the racoons and stray cats than garbage. Eww. It's might be possible to tame the animals and bathe them, but trash is just trash.

All I know is that if I see someone on my property digging though my trash cans, their flesh is going to meet a wooden baseball bat. I don't have the patience to clean up the mess they leave all over the place from tearing open the garbage bags. However, if I throw out a lamp, a shelf, mattress, or any other household item, they can go ahead and take that since that won't make a mess.

I do not go through dumpsters, but I keep almost everything that seems as if it could be used to fix, replace, build, rebuild, McGyver or mend a broken thing on the boat. As a matter of fact, the last three days have been spent throwing out (ouch, that hurts, or oh no, not THAT, please) and updating the inventory of everything on the boat.
For instance, we have lots of pieces of wood, metal and plastic. From these I could build a mount for a pump, or seal a crack in something or even stop a leak. Nuts, bolts, washers and screws by the thousands.
Unlike you all, we do not have the option to run to the store for something if we need it, when out sailing, so if we don't have one, we'd better be able to fix or make one, if we need it.

I don't go looking through bins but if someone puts a nice little table or something to the curb, I will take it if I like it and need it. The majority of my furnishings were free :)
