Is it normal to disapprove of napping in the workplace

Is it more important to be tired and unproductive for several hours (but appear to be working), or to take a 15 minute nap and then get a lot done (but risk someone finding out you're napping, which is taboo for some reason)?

  • When I worked at Ups on third shift I would go to the bathroom and sit on the toilet and take 10-15 min. naps. Helped immensely.

  • I used to have to do background checks as part of my responsibilities at my old job. They had to be done on a secure computer within a locked room. If I needed it, I would go in that room and take a nap from time to time.

I used to work with someone in an open plan office who used to sleep under his desk at various times.

I'm assuming you get breaks at work, why not utilise for your naps? Or here is a better solution as others have mentioned here. Try get better sleep during the night.

"which is taboo for some reason"; are you serious?
If you were intelligent enough to actually own a company one day (highly unlikely from your post, but let's just pretend for a moment), do you think you'd make much money paying your employees to sleep?

    • Yes, I would, actually. I'd take away the coffee machine and encourage employees to take a 15-30 minute nap after lunch, so they wouldn't be staring at their screen for hours doing nothing.

I'm pretty sure the time spent napping more than makes up for the amount gained in productivity.
But unfortunately, it's better to appear as if you're working harder by not napping, even if that means you're less productive.
