Is it normal to do this to help the homeless?

So I'm not really sure how to start. Basically, my city council has slowly been filling itself with conservatives that have convinced enough of the populace they are good with funds and have been an absolute embarrassment. Instead of spending our tax dollars on things we actually needed, like a new recycling center our town desperately needs (we are a college town with a heavy homeless population as well, and you need a car to drive out of town to go to the nearest recycling center now) they spent $400,000 on an ice skating rink. In a city where it never gets cold enough to use it. So basically it's $400k down the toilet.

And like I mentioned earlier, there's a homeless problem no one has wanted to do anything about even when the council was more politically neutral. They set up 100 pallet shelters that have been sitting empty for months. The drug use amongst them is horrible. Uncapped needles everywhere. I once found a needle with heroin still in the needle and a piece of flesh at the end of the tip. I'm not demonizing them. They need help. I'm watching these people die on the streets and no one wants to do anything. The resources we had for them are drying up as well.

The most recent thing is they fired the city manager and replaced him with the police chief, who has no experience with that kind of job.

There's just so much to complain to the city council to about their corruption. Also, after a brief google search I guess they're not going to use the pallet shelters after all, so us tax payers are now owners of a bunch of empty, useless boxes along with a melted ice skating rink. Thank you, city council and your wonderful money saving skills.

I'm just wondering if it's worth going to the city council to be heard. I'm disabled and it takes a lot to get me out of the house. But this is ridiculous. Nothing is getting better.

Something else I've been doing is buying food for homeless people who sleep near my nearby grocery store. I've thought about buying pizzas, which can be bought for pretty cheap, and offering that in exchange for their dirty needles that I could put in a sharps container. Now, I *understand* how dangerous that is, especially since I'm a woman. I'm not naive. But I think if I stay away from certain areas and bring my fiance with me I can mitigate danger as much as possible. I also have never had any issues with anyone I've given food to before, they just seem pretty happy to eat, even when one guy had a needle pop out of his shirt. I just told him to cap it.

Just help the homeless, the gov will always misappropriate money 6

I feel for you... I do understand. Unfortuantely, most city councils do not care much what the citizens of the city want. Most of them totally believe that they know what is best for the city.

You are doing great by supplying food and I like your idea of providing sharps containers.

Please look for a local charity that also helps the homeless and take your ideas to them. They will likely support you the best - and if you are willing to take the lead on even a small program they will often provide more funds and more people to assist you with it.

You sound like such a decent person.

Why not run for city council? Maybe you could get something done. I like the food for needles idea but yeah it could be dangerous.

    • I hadn't thought of that. I guess it's because I'm a 26 year old nobody with a body that barely wants to stand up.

Not against the idea, though! Just not sure how many people would vote for me, although maybe I could appeal to the younger crowd, *if they would actually go out and vote*

  • And yes, this post is partially to complain about my city council. Pretty strong chance of me grabbing my cane and hobbling my way down there!

      Work with what you got.

      1. Find a way to incentivize the homeless people to move into the pallet homes. Perhaps you could find free styrofoam packing peanuts for them to sleep in.

      2. Get federal money for a methadone clinic in one of the pallet homes.

      3. Pizza and hot soup smell good. That might help attract them. Put a beat up industrial stove in one of the other pallet homes to heat soup to serve outside.

      4. Possibilities are endless, but you must understand poverty economics. Get to work but be efficient. You must solve your community’s problems. City council members are elected for their charm. They don’t have enough talent to recognize workable solutions
