My mom makes us dry the shower with a mop after every shower, it's got to be bone dry, I've never known anyone else do this but she claims everyone does it.

Well, If you don't like it think of a practical joke you can play on Mom that directly involves mold. Mwahahaha!
...just kidding.
It helps keep the shower cleaner as dampness encourages mould growth. I wouldn't say it's a common thing, though.
It depends on the material your shower is made from and how nice you like to keep there things. Most ppl don't do it so I'd say while it might be a good idea in some cases most people don't do it.
