Is it normal to enter a place and look for escape methods?

My boyfriend has a background in martial arts and is a body builder/fitness trainer. However I don't know if that has to do with one habit of his. Whenever we enter a building or location, he becomes quiet and more focused looking, seeing his surroundings. He tells me that he looks around for the best escape route/plan; as in not just typical exits but also Windows or balconies/etc.

Is this a normal thing to do at a new environment? I don't do it personally besides looking for bathrooms, typical exit signs, cameras. He apparently does it for those AND much more. I don't think it's paranoia, but possibly a survival instinct that runs deep in him (he says that he needs to know in order to save his ass). Also, he's no criminal. Not sure about this habit though. Can anyone relate?

It might not be normal or even common, but I do think it's quite wise.

Yes. This is normal, when people get involved in
with martial arts they let it go to their brain
sure this is a instinct of survival but he needs
not to lose his head over it cause it can start
    to reflect on you.

I was in mental health unit of hospital and this
woman was a police officer, when she was admitted
she walked down the hall and looked at people like
saying i will take your ass out..So see what i mean
people can let things go to their head i know your
boyfriend wants to protect you and himself but if
he gets to the point that he is controlling than
you need to second think this relationship over.

Wow that was well explained. Thanks.
It's not a big bother, but it did stand out to me when he told me about this. I was wondering if he was exaggerating this to make himself seem "cooler"; but I guess not.

I do think martial arts had some sort of place in this, but was not sure if that trained him to be like this. I think it's fascinating because I guess it's not normal, but it is for those in martial arts/etc.

You're welcome:) Yes, this does happen with
people who get into things, whether it's martial
arts, fitness, exercising, being a police officer etc.
yeah unfortunately some things we get into can
become a extreme thing that can not help us but
lead us into other extreme behaviors.

Example my family knew this woman who was a Avon
lady and she was in good shape as far as weight
but for many years she would walk and walk going
around selling her Avon and as time went on this
woman developed a slow heart rate ( Bradycardia)
and supposedly all the walking she did lead to
this heart condition and she ended up in the
hospital and lived for many years with a
pacemaker to regulate her heart rate but what
happened she over did it with walking and this
led to a heart condition for her so see we can't
never be too careful when we get into things.

"Overwalking" wouldn't cause a heart condition: it's only recently in human evolution that we didn't walk everywhere all the time, hunting and gathering.

The Avon lady must've had an underlying heart condition to have ended up with any problem requiring a pacemaker.

Exercise can result in a slower heart rate, as with athletes, but that's healthy for them given their training regimes: it's not a negative medical condition
