Is it normal to fear restaurant jobs?

My first job was at a BK and it was the worst experience I've ever had. Depressing coworkers, rare breaks, broken equipment, and constant, fast-paced work. I got fired when my boss called and said I was going to get less hours because I wasn't good enough for the holidays, then took me almost completely off the schedule for the rest of the month (only had one day). After the holidays, she apparently went on vacation. Calling to check the schedule every week, I was never put back on the schedule. Then something happened to their phone line since I wasn't able to connect no matter when I called or what phone I used. Never got a call back for an update. No one even called me to tell me about my last paycheck, I found about it from a chance encounter with a coworker who was working a second job at a nearby grocery store.

Recently, I saved up a ton of money and quit a retail job while looking for better opportunities, but I still cringe when I see restaurant job openings. Are all food-related jobs that bad?

After experiencing the crap you did, it's pretty normal to not want that kind of job again.

This is why people go to college.

Be a night security guard. It's slower paced.
