Is it normal to feel constant fear of fucking up at workplace

I work at ER in a hospital but I feel constant fear every day of working there. However, it's not because of the fear of catching Covid-19 and other infectious diseases but rather fear of getting scolded by doctors, higher ups, patients and making mistakes when carrying out some procedures. Not to mention, it's a very busy ER and I can't handle multi-tasking and urgent situations well. I take medication to control my anxiety at workplace almost every day and I know it's not healthy for me to keep relying on drugs to numb the fear.

Totally normal. The only doctors who don't fear fucking up are the ones that are so arrogant that it makes their patients suffer. You will never know everything. Medicine is too big for you to know everything. In any situation there could always be something that you missed so pay attention to your colleagues and take into account their thoughts, even if just for a moment.

Doctors are scary. They often (but not always) have huge egos and no social skills. Bad combo for the people who work with them. Just remember that you are in a place of work and no one is above the law - if someone crosses the line then don't be scared to make a formal complaint. Some of them think they can treat people like shit because they've "earned the right" by becoming a consultant/fellow. Don't stand for that. Work hard and take your orders but don't forget that you are a person who deserves a basic level of respect.

Can you leave the ER? It's renowned for being the most stressful dept, and seems to attract the biggest egos. Maybe try and do something a bit offbeat like dermatology or hyperbarics. You won't have to deal with a lot of this shit in those areas of medicine.

  • It is normal. If you find stress overwhelming you should change jobs tho.

It takes a very certain type of person to do your job. If you were not good at it - well you would not be working there. Right ? That is very high pressure, you have your shit together, your ducks in a row, your panties are NOT in a bunch. To do your job you have to be aware of your surroundigs and the patients all the time making sure you are giving the right person the right meds. You cant really go to work with a hangover, or going out and getting high all night then atay up and go back to work. Myself, i would shake all of you alls hands to show the appreciation we have for you.you rarely get a full good nights sleep, you are always concerned for others. The cape and the suit with that big red "S" should go to each and every one of the first responders. To put yourself out there like you do with your thoughts on the sick or injured and not on yourself worrying about scuffing your new shoes. God Bless every one of you. And Thank you from those you help, rescue, and save.

    • At ER, it's obviously not. I used to work at anesthesiology department and it had never been chaotic like this.

I can totally understand getting all flustered and anxiety ridden in the chaos of the ER but at the same time, I'd be freaking out doing anesthesia stuff because it has to be so precise or risk bad things happening...just being the recipient of a spinal thingy when I was about to have my C-section freaked me the hell out. One wrong move on either of out parts would have ended badly. Good grief.

  • Something that might work better than medication, use that fear as a motivation to not mess up. If you're told to do something, just think if you can do it without not knowing what to do. If you can't, then ask whoever you're talking to how and if you can then use that as confidence for doing what you have to do.

If you do things confidently like that a few times, it should build up like a natural well of confidence inside of you. You'll know you're not a screw up if you know you're doing everything right.

Something else that may help, pay attention to your breathing and heart rate from time to time. Adrenaline makes your heart beat faster and heavier and increases your breathing. Controlling that will help you control yourself.

I hope you get it, nursing sounds like an adventurous job! ✌

I've been on anti-anxiety meds and for me, all they did was cause problems. Not saying that is exactly what will happen to you, but it's something to think about.

I would say this isn't the right job for you, and to look elsewhere for a better fit.

I used to care at my job till last week. My boss was like ok I need you to focus on these parts in white. Im like the sdls is a bad idea. Hes like why. Anyways short awbser being i can't see the paint well when its heavy light etc. Sdls are stupid easy to fuvk up and when you fuvk up itsbalways a few hours loss.

Well he's likevon do these instead. No problem. Well his boss comes over and is like yea no your only doing the colors now. Like the fuck? Dude I told you about this before you even hired me this isn't a surprise. So yea I dont care anymore. Its a touchy subject and he completely ruined my night.

If he wants me to focus on the one thing I cant do worth a damn their instead if the many things I can do pretty well thay needs to be done just as badly well thats on him. Im not letting it get to me when it comes back cause its garbage. I can't wait yo say I told you so.

ive done fairly high stress shit for a while

a little fear is a good thing it keeps you alert to the fact that if you fuck up the consequences could be dire for other people

more time in the position might calm you down a bit but its important to not get complacent

but if youre still freakin out 24/7 after many months its a problem
