Is it normal to find these cell phone prices?

I was looking to buy a new cellphone. I was on Canadian mobile phone carrier Virgin Mobile website and saw some crazy prices.

I got interested in HTC sensation and Samsung Galaxy S2(both pretty similar phones). On the virgin mobile website, they are priced at $350 and $370 with 3 year contract. Adding the starting fee and taxes, they would be $435 and $458 respectively with 3 year contracts. However retail prices of the phones are listed to be $550 and $600. There's not much of a discount, right? Or do you think the 3 year lock-in contracts are worth it?

  • Wow. I'm not sure about the currency difference, but on my end that is definitely cheap.

Bah, it's a phone for crying out loud! I bought mine outright for 60$.

  • Weird. I'm sure where I live when you take no contracts you pay the full price for the phone and when you do take a 3 year contract, you barely pay anything. I'd rather take a contract instead of paying $600 for a phone.

If you can afford to buy a phone outright I think you're always better off doing that. It means that you are free to upgrade as and when you want. In the UK some carriers offer really competitive monthly plans where you only have to give a months notice but you don't get a phone. Don't know what your options are in Canada
