Is it normal to get a grey hair at 30?

So the day after my 30th birthday I discovered a long silvery hair, the rest of my hair is very dark brown. I am healthy - eat healthily with lots of fruit, vegetables, fish etc, exercise, and am often told I look a lot younger blah blah. It seems so dramatic for it to appear like this just the day after I've turned 30. Maybe it turned that colour on my birthday actually, I only noticed it the day after though. How can my body know I am 30? How would it know it's been 30 circles round the sun since I was born? Will I get more soon? I find it exciting and sexy actually, I've always like young people with grey hair like Taylor Hicks from american idol...

Grey hair can happen at any age and isn't a solid indicator of age. One of my friends started going grey at 18 and my Father only started going grey in his mid fifties.

Yeah very normal my dad went full blown grey by 25. It's just in his genes & so did his siblings. If it's bothering you just dye it as close to your natural color as possible. Don't be too botherd by it. Nothing to fret over :-D

As far as I'm concerned, keeping my hair, no matter what color it is, is the important thing. It's a distinguished look, a bit of grey at the temples, or all over. You can always take the nick name of "the silver fox" if it all goes grey. Not to worry, hair beats bald, any day of the year.

  • My brother has a lot of white hair. Started when he was eigheen and gotten more and more white. Not gonna lie, I'm a bit jealous. He has white hair but his hair isn't thinning or coming out.

My ex had a lot of grey hair, at 26. I had to ask, he said it started around 18.

He would attest high levels of stress from school and work as the reason it started so young.

Perhaps you subconsciously looked a little harder, in light of reaching the big 3-0?

Grey hair is not so much health related as it is stress related right?
I started getting this thin streak of white hair around 25 above my right eye. I will be 30 in a couple more months and the streak has gotten thicker.
I always thought women whose hair went completely white looked sophisticated. I have very thick hair and if it's going to happen I'd rather it happen quickly than go through decades of a peppered look.

    • I think the peppered look is sophisticated as well.

  • Ok, thank you lovely people. Im a woman btw so not sure about calling myself a 'silver fox.' I like the prospect of having a few streaks of grey, it just seemed so funny to have one suddenly the day after turning 30.

I knew a 30 year old woman who, all of her hair was grey. She didn't like it but I thought she looked very attractive with it.

But getting one grey hair is not uncommon at all. I've been seeing grey hairs appear in my head since I was 11.
