Is it normal to get incredibly depressed after taking the morning after pill?

I have had to take the morning after pill on two different occasions after condoms have split, most recently a few days ago. On both occasions I have suffered from crippling physical depression for a few days after taking it. I know that it is an enormous dose of hormones and therefore it is normal for it to do anything weird it likes to your moods, so when I ask is it normal I mean, is it something that you or someone you know has experienced. Please comment. Thanks!

I think it is normal. I just took the plan b and about 2 days after I fell into a really low, despressive state. I struggle with depression anyway because of Depo Provera. I am starting to think my body just isn't too fond of synthetic hormones.

I've taken it before...I didn't really get depressed..just kinda freaked out the first time I had to get it. The second time it didn't work. So much for that. Anyways, you should get on bc pills, rings, or a patch. If you're worried about STD's then have a condom too although since they break, you can still get one so I don't understand your argument on that. At least if the condom breaks, you'll get an STD but you won't be pregnant hopefully. ha!

You just took a pill that has 3 times the hormones of birth control, which in normal birth control is enough to have significant effects on your mood. Completely normal.

Just curious, is that the only negative side effect you get from the pill? I had to take it once (go figure there are people in this world who dont know to stop fucking and take the condom off after they nut) and I had crippling cramps for a few days. I never wanna have to take plan b again XD

    Yes.

I have a few friends that have taken the morning after pill, they reccommended that one should take it before bed, because when they took it, it really goofed up their hormones for a while and made them get very aggressive/depressive and hormonal.

The morning after pill messes with your hormones so temporary changes to your mood are to be expected in many cases. Just don't take it on a regular basis (once every few months at least to be considered as a regular basis) because it, very much like abortion, can render you infertile or otherwise damage your fertility.

I repeat, because judging from your last post you seem to be a bit ill-informed on the topic. The Morning after pill is NOT MEANT TO BE USED ON ANY SORT OF REGULAR BASIS. It can seriously screw with your hormones. Especially if you're young. You might be getting symptoms of depression BECAUSE you've fucked with your hormones, if you're using it on a regular basis. The morning after pill is a HUGE doseage of synthetic hormones and can seriously fuck up your body much worse than the birth control pill.

    • Um. No. I'm not ill-informed. I just found angel's comment to be completely reductive and unconstructive.

I know the MAP isn't supposed to be used on a regular basis. That is why I have used it twice in 5 years, and only when the condoms have broken. And I know that it doesn't protect you from STDs - I was using a condom, not really much you can do when it busts in half. Please don't treat me like I'm stupid. I took precautions, it's not my fault that the condom split.

As you may have gathered, I have a sensitivity to the hormones which are used in birth control medication, which is why I'm not on the pill, or the implant, or anything else which messes with my hormones. I'm considering the coil, but I've heard it's quite painful to insert.

Fair enough. Try the Nuvaring first. I'm very drug sensitive and I have been on it for 5 years. Works great for me, Google it.
There are a lot of idiots that come on this site thinking the morning after pill is birth control. I know many people who think that irl. I'm used to people thinking it's birth control. Didn't mean to offend.

Why do you think that emergency contraception isn't birth control? That's literally what it is.

"Plan B One-Step is a type of emergency contraception. This is birth control that can prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex."

I took it twice a month and it has fucked my emotions over...what should i do?

False. PLAN B DOES NOT CAUSE INFERTILITY! It also DOES NOT become less effective over time.

You probably don't wanna call anyone ill-informed if you're spreading lies like that. There's NO evidence that the morning after pill causes infertility or loses efficacy.

However, if you're using it over and over again, it's obviously a better idea to get on the birth control pill. I've also seen many young women become extremely depressed with high anxiety after taking plan B. It's a mega dose of hormones and that can dramatically affect you.

        https://www.optionsforsexualhealth.org/birth-control-pregnancy/emergency-contraception-ecp/ecp-plan-b

Here's a source backing up my claim that Plan B becomes less effective if used regularly and is not intended for regular use. Regular use of Plan B puts you at risk of infertility via substitution for protection in that if you're not using protection, you are exposing yourself to STDs that you're obviously not treating because you're not being tested which is a requiment for a birth control prescription in the United states. In and of itself, it may not cause infertility but it will do a number on your hormones after regular use due to aforementioned factors.

I'm not some damned neo-conservative redbeck. I have used the pill since this post and have purchased it for other individuals. I would always recommend it as a last resort but would always recommend actual birth control first. In the same tone, this is EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION, just like you wouldn't (or shouldn't) use your emergency brake as opposed to your actual brakes unless those fail, EC is only, ONLY, intended for use in the failure or absence of birth control. The implication is in the name itself.

Maybe it's time you considered using the pill BEFORE someone penetrates you with an erect penis?

    • Perhaps! Then I could be on here complaining about how I'm fat, moody, and have STD's instead :D

Yeah but you only gain weight if you let yourself.

as for STDs... maybe now is a good time to start being pickier about what you bring home to bed?

and of course... you're getting laid. sex will take care of being moody =)

Also, the more often you take it, the less effective it becomes. You should really read the box.

Youre not reading the box, because that's wrong.

Ok seriously. Not all birth control pills do that. The NuvaRing works great and I have not known anybody to get "fat and moody" off of it, especially not me. As far as the actual pill goes, there's more than one on the market and little research can go a long way in that department.

And have STDs instead? The morning after pill does not rid you of STDs. That's completely irrelevant to discussion of any birth control pills. If you wish to avoid STDs, use condoms.

The Morning After pill could render you infertile or damage your fertility and fuck up your hormones FAR more than the birth control pill could.

She did NOT murder an embryo!! It would have still been sperm and who is to say if it would've ended in a pregnancy anyway! Some people!! Grrr.
Anyways not sure if it's normal but maybe it is psychological. If it bothers you, ask a doctor

I have experienced depression from this pill also. But the depression was not about whether or not I killed a baby. It was about my whole life. Very dark moods. Nothing seemed good or right in any way. Everything was a problem. The slightest issue I could normally deal with was an issue. Life in general seemed like such an effort in every way. Glad that 6 months down the line this side effect has gradually diminished. Believe me this drug/hormone is hardcore for some. But, there's light at the end of the tunnel. Am back to normal now but it does take time. For me anyway.

I have not experienced nor knew someone who has experienced this. I'm sure it's common if that's what you're asking.

Uh... yeah it should be normal.

At least on a psychological level. Whatever your beliefs on when life starts, abortions, having children, etc. etc. there are going to be psychological repercussions. From person to person they probably vary in severity, and a lot of it is probably going on at a subconscious level.

This doesn't mean that you are (or should be) feeling guilty, per se, but even just a wistful sort of "what if" can make us feel a little down - for a number of reasons! I don't think you should worry too much about it, it's not abnormal and it doesn't mean you need to spend 6 hours thinking it over while looking out over a pristine lake and watching the sun rise. It's just a natural side effect when you process things like that.

As for the medical side of things - if you feel that might be a contributing factor, or if you simply want to make sure, please consult a doctor. It could be pertinent to do so.

It's not abortion, so I'd imagine that women who take it feel psychologically about as bad as a man who wears a condom.

It's because you've just murdered an embryo.

The morning after pill produces hormones which prevent you from becoming pregnant in the first place. It doesn't abort a pregnancy. If the OP had become pregnant from this incident, the pill doesn't interfere with or damage the fetus.

It prevents implantation in the endometrium, not fertilisation. If egg and sperm fuse, a zygote has formed and it begins dividing until it forms a blastocyst of 70-100 cells. This is when it tries to attach to the uterine wall, but the wall says "screw you, kid. No room at the inn." because of the pill. The blastocyst dies.

Ok, blastocysts have no neurons, so they can't experience pain. I have no ethical qualms about killing them, but the bible gestapo would.
