Is it normal to hate a certain music genre?

I'm one of those people that have an obsession with music. I play guitar and basically give my life to music. I like more alternative and punk music more than anything-which is really rare where I'm from.

I focus on music more than anything, and I have respect for all music...That is, except pop music. I feel like pop music has ruined the entire reputation of music altogether. You don't even have to be talented anymore to be a pop artist. Meanwhile, bands like The 1975 are working their butts off to make music, while being totally under appreciated.

Sure, some pop music is good and takes talent, but those songs on the radio about shaking your butt or cheating on your girlfriend; those aren't talent. Am I the only one that feels this way? Or is this not normal?

I'm ignoring your mention of lyrics. Lyrics have nothing to do with music. If you're judging music based on lyrics, you're missing the point.

I've always thought it was unfortunate that pop music has such a bad reputation. Of course it's true that most pop music is absolute shit, but most music in general is absolute shit. Some of the best music ever composed happens to be in the pop genre, but it gets passed over by critics and music lovers alike because of the idea that all pop music must be mainstream (manufactured), predictable, simplistic bullshit, when, in fact, many of the genres most praised are much blander and more simplistic compositionally.

I wish people would stop letting their social biases direct their personal taste. This leads to the premature rejection of good pop music (or any culturally disfavourable genre) and the celebration of mediocre music in the indie, dance, and metal genres (for example). I honestly think most people like/dislike music because they feel they're supposed to, culturally.

Discovering good music is annoyingly similar to searching for a needle in a haystack, but it's even easier to miss the needle if you already have an expectation about what the needle "should" look like, or where in the pile it'll be found. Hating any broad category of which you haven't been exposed to in its entirety is just closed minded thinking, plain and simple.

I feel like they don't respect music at all because they aren't passionate about music. They don't write their own music and know nothing about music when asked in interviews. Shows like the voice and american idol annoy me because I know they are there because someone told them they can sing.

They don't spend hours practicing their craft at all because if they did the music wouldn't be so shitty and repetitive.
