Is it normal to have a useless talent?

I understand why we have the term "Starving artist" and in art class our teacher went over the history to us. I know that its hard to make it as an artist but honestly its all I do very well. I dont have computer skills but I make art in paint programs on my computer. Is there some way to do something with these? People say my art is incredible but it gets me no where. When I was little I hoped if I entered enough art contests I would eventually be discovered. I win most contests I enter. I have entered in National and placed top ten and I have entered locals and state and won first prize.

I voted not normal because you have a special gift most people don't have. Don't waste it.

Your talent isn't useless. I highly recommend that you social network and share you art online. I use Flickr and Flickr has the option where you can make books with your art and they'll sell them for you. Also, get your work copyrighted to Protect your rights as an artist.

Art can be applied in so many different fields: design, fashion, album art, etc.

If at all possible, you should see if you can get a scholarship to an art school, to get a leg up. Alternatively, you can try to join an art collective. :) if you end up making a profile, please post the link. I really want to see your work.

It's like a group of artists. They work on projects, be it commission, collaboration or their own and they make money for it.

Okay, next step, find a gallery or some place to display your art, then sell it.

A lot of people post their art on websites or blogs with their contact info. Especially tumblr a lot of people reblog artwork. And companies can message you if they like what they see, ask to use your work for commercial use and offer to pay you.
But if you do post your stuff online remember to watermark your work because everyone's stealing pictures these days claiming it as their own.

And some classes that you take especially in college set up galleries for their students where they invite people to come look and you can set your own price for your work. And you may not sell anything but it still is a way to get your name out there.

Best of luck to you!! And I love art and wouldn't mind seeing some of your work. <3

Also I would like to add that I'm sure your great at a lot of other things as well, art is probably just something you excel at and love to do.

Your signature / name or identification on your pictures so people cannot save them and claim them as your own..
Those are just for your website and then you sell the pictures that don't have a watermark to your customers.

        Here's an example:
        <a href="http://image.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/564244/564244,1278300130,1/stock-photo-islands-watermark-in-the-sea-of-the-gulf-thailand-56520817.jpg" rel="nofollow">http://image.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_...</a>

See how their name / website is on the picture?
I hope I explained that well.

You do realize that having any artistic skill is a major asset in many aspects of your life. Not only that but it can broaden your job opportunities. My dad is a very talented artist and won many awards for it as well however when the time came for him to choose a career he ended up becoming the manager of a tourism company instead. However because of his artistic abilities he was able to exceed expectations and received many bonuses plus some incredible awards for his work.
Now you sound like your a very talented individual so don't sell yourself short. There are hundreds of jobs that you could find that involve art just do a bit of research and you'll realize that your "useless" talent will be the reason for your success in life.
Anyways best of luck and don't give up.

Same here dude. I'm going to school for computer science now just because it seemed the most practical thing I could manage to learn. I would love to major in art but it's like you said. I was gonna minor in computer imaging since it seemed like a pretty practical way to get into art in college, but meh it still feels like a waste of money to me. I think if you're really meant for a career in art you wouldn't have to go to college for it...

That's pretty awesome that you win the contests though, that's what I always figured would get you to a professional career. Hasn't it got you any offers or other benefits? Also how do you find contests like that? I've wantdd to do some but they are all pay to enter around here unless you're an art major :/

You need to go to a real art school like RISD. There you are not only taught how to hone your skills into a marketable product, but also how to market that product.
You are wasting your time with contests and hoping for your 'big break'; you might as well get a job at McDonald's for all the good those will do.

If you have talent, there are many programs for scholarships and there are patrons of the arts. It's much more about your portfolio than your financial where with all.
If this is something you want and if you have the talent, then go do it.
