Is it normal to have coughing fits after high intensity workouts?

So I am working on creating healthy habits. Today I worked out on the elliptical for 30 minutes, high intensity, and afterwards could not breathe fully without coughing. That's okay, I walked on the treadmill to cool down for 15 minutes and tried breathing deeply again. Coughing fit ensues, this time with throbbing headache.
I think I have exercise-induced asthma. A friend says it's just because I'm out of shape. So. IIN?

This happened to me when I first started running long distance. It will go away once you're more physically fit

I'd say you're just out of shape. That was the way I used to be on ellipticals, treadmills, and exercise bikes back when I was fat and trying to lose weight. I can do them just fine now. What I did was do high intensity stuff for 5 minutes at a time and over time slowly increased it to a longer time.
