Is it normal to hurt myself?

Whenever an extremely negative emotion comes over me (anything from depression to rage) I hurt myself. I used to cut myself a lot, but I stopped for the most part. However, an even worse habit has developed - hitting my head. It was an unconscious thing, but I just noticed I was doing it when I hurt myself.

Focus on the pain, the only thing that's real.

Try using exercise as a way to vent out , instead. It may sound weird, but it can be a good way to basically transfer powerful emotions into. (Ex; Stress, anger, sadness)

Cutting yourself is ending the pain you felt. Some people who died of suicides doesnt want to kill themselves, they just want to stop or end the pain. Its too painful to handle. I used to cut too because I was having depression and suicidal thoughts. My advice to you is to stop hurting yourself. Go to a quiet place, try to pick a rock and give all your strength in throwing it. Give it a try. You cant do it in public ofcourse but you need some control. Do this, listen to music that you can relate with. This are the music I used to listen "Demons" and "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons. "Counting Stars", "Secrets", "All.the right moves" and " Stop and Stare" by Onerepublic. Linkin park songs are good too. It helps me a lot. I just want to share what im doing when im depressed. "scars have healed but it doesnt mean the pain has"

    • It isn't about solving problems, it's about releasing what I have bottled up inside and feeling better at least for a time. Of course it won't solve my problems.

Therapy would be something to seriously consider.

You're obviously depressed. I would seek a therapist or an online support group.

Only people with mental health issues do things like that to themselves so, compared with the average populace, it's not normal. Are you in treatment?
