Is it normal to keep mice as pets?

At first I was creeped out by them and tried to kill them with traps, but they kept avoiding the traps, so I gave up and decided to live with them. I have a cat (though he doesn't chase them for some reason) and they've been living in my bedroom and behind my washer for about a month now. I leave a few potato chips out each night and about 3:00 a.m., they show up to eat. My only problem is that they wake me up (also, I'm a bit scared of the hanta virus).

Mice are terrible creatures. They're nothing but filthy, inbred low lives that don't help the world in any way.
Also, I heard they eat people.

I think your affection for these little guys is normal and natural. However, the normal and healthy way is keep domestic, fancy mice or rats in cages as pets. It's not safe or sanitary to keep wild rodents as pets, because they can carry parasites and disease.

I would highly advice that you make any repairs necessary to keep the wild mice out, and then invest in some humane traps. You can set your little friends loose outside once your house is secure. Then if you so chose you can be a proud parent of a pocket pet. I think you're very blessed to have such a good, gentle kitty. Maybe you can get a rat or a rabbit if your looking for a small animal that you can let run loose in the house, but only when supervised. I'm not a fan of free range, unsupervised small animals in the house for the sakes of your safety and theirs alike.

I guess the OP has never heard of the Black Death, which is estimated to have killed 30–60% of Europe's total population, a few years back? It was spread by rodents, by the way.

Aww that is cute, I've had "fancy mice" before (the ones from the pet store... but i think they were meant for snake food)

this will be you OP- http://youtu.be/AsITgqGQgj4
(i actually think that's kind of cute, but I know it's bad for the rats' health)

People who keep mice usually have friends who keep snakes, because mice breed so fast. Then the mice guys can give the extra mice to the snake guys to feed the snakes, before there are too many mice in the house. Works out well.
Of course, if you can't catch the mice, you'll have to cut out the middle man and get a snake yourself, or move out when the mice overrun your house.
