Is it normal to learn amazing facts when you're young?

My son told me recently that the most amazing thing he ever learnt was that I had a name other than mom :o) That made me smile as he must've been about 2 or 3 years old. I remembered that when I started school at 4 years old I was absolutely amazed to learn that numbers could also be written as words, eg. 1 or one, 2 or two, etc.

Have you ever learnt something that you found totally amazing?

Is is normal that these amazing facts were when we were so young and innocent?

  • One of the most amazing things I discovered as a kid was that "the world" went beyond my town.

Up until that point I had thought other towns were on Mars, Jupiter etc.

When I was like 5, I learned that not everyone in the world has a different name. When I was little, I thought that old pictures were black and white because the color faded away but when i was 10, I learned that cameras weren't made to make colored pictures in the 1950s.

When I was about six, I discovered that there were more than two choices of jobs: Walmart employee or farmer.

I'm still discovering amazing facts. They're just less interesting to most other people.

Two best things I've heard kids say, though, were my niece saying "Why is a dog?" when trying to work out why things are the way they are and a pregnant colleague's daughter ask "Mummy, do you have two spines in you?"
