Is it normal to literally weigh less when stressed?

Back when I was under a lot of stress I had a hard time putting on weight. I do not have as much stress now and have gone from <115 to 120 llbs. I noticed my weight fluctuates a couple pounds daily. Yesterday my nerves were bad and I weighed 118, after forcing myself to eat all day as much as I normally do. Today I took a shit in the morning and before I ate breakfast I weighed in at 120 llbs.

It has to be because if the stress right? It weakens the spirit so when you loose some spirit you lose some weight? IIn?

Usually when weight loss or weight gain can't be explained by calorie intake, exercise, or bowel movements, it's about water retention. You probably retain less water when you're stressed. It could be hormonal. As Short4Words said, sweating could definitely be a lot to do with it, but people can even lose moisture through their nose and mouth through evaporation or mucous expulsion. That's why even sick people without diarrhea can become easily dehydrated.

It's spiritual but maybe not as much as you think. When you have anxiety you lose weight. I'm not sure about the science behind it but you will sweat more and you're body is more active during panic so you're using up some calories that way too.

    • That makes sense. Does this happen instantaneously?

I was munching on a bag of dark chocolate chips and and stepped onto the scale to find I'd gained an extra pound. Then some of the chocolate got stuck to the roof of my mouth and I freaked out a little. At that moment the scale reported a loss of nearly 2 pounds! I relaxed and ate a few more of the chocolate chips and back to normal I was.
