Is it normal to make vague sounds rather than speaking with words?

For as long as I can remember I've often made sounds instead of replying with words to people I'm speaking to. When I'm embarrassed or unsure of what to say, I pretty much always make vague noises in the back of my throat which could mean anything. Some words, however, I've almost completely replaced with specific sounds. Goodbye, for example, sounds something like 'Ynunnh', and I make a sound something like 'myow' when someone asks my opinion of something and I want to say that I think it's so-so. The same sound, but higher pitched, expresses interest. As a child I used to hiss like a cat when anything upset me, and I still do when I'm startled.

Obviously I know exactly what every sound means, but I think people who don't know me well think that I'm just making random noises. Does anybody else do this?

I actually kinda do that too, especially the hissing thing. Peeps that get to know me start learning what these things mean, and I like to think that it makes our conversations a bit more unique. My boyfriend has especially learned what everything means, along with little physical quirks and stuff like that, that I wasn't even aware of.

It's kind of refreshing to see i'm not the only one who does it.

You and the animals, huh? I always thought speech, using clear, concise words, was the key to good communication and one of the main things that separates us from the beasts. I'm guessing you don't agree.

I can't claim to be a clear communicator. But I did think it had to be at least a semi-common habit. It's not like I don't use words most of the time.....
Though I have to admit that I feel like a failure of a human when a colleague surprises me and I jump back a few paces hissing.
