Is it normal to miss small business shops?

When I was a kid, my town had a bunch of small family owned shops. We had a pharmacy, a convenience store, shoe shops, clothing places, bodega, and markets that were all "mom and pop" shops. Over the years, large businesses came in like Walgreens, 7-11, Family Dollar, Walmart, Target, Shop Rite, Starbucks, etc. Whenever one of these shops came in, the small business equivalent closed a year later. Got nothing but big business names in town now. I miss the old shops. Iin?

    Small shops in Bulgaria continue to thrive, because they get stock that's not available for the large supermarkets.

    Basically we have Lidl, Billa, Metro, Aldi, Kaufland and Carefour. But none of these have deals with local producers.

    So local milk, cheese, meats and such are only available in the smaller, family-owned stores.

    Sure, their business has slowed down, cause they only sell specific products now, but that means they can up the quality and sell the best local stuff.

    Tho I suspect they are a dying breed. Cause supermarkets are slowly getting into selling local products. Creating a web, where every local Bulgarian thing is available in every corner of Bulgaria.

    The same thing happened to Germany. Nowadays you only have a few specialized butcher shops, bakeries and spice shops. And their prices are outrageous and the quality not much better than what the supermarket offers.

    I suspect small Bulgarian shops will die out too in the next 5-10 years.

    That's capitalism for 'ya. You either adapt, or drown.

    Welcome to capitalism. I'll never understand why people hate me for being communist when capitalism is way worse in its idealism. Just has a better track history.
