Is it normal to only wash my hair with water?

I am a male with reasonably short hair, and have noticed that after I wash my hair with shampoo or conditioner, it ends up dry and brittle for a few days. This effect is lesser when I only wash it with cold water.
Is it a good idea to not use shampoo or conditioner for a while? Are there any side effects to doing this?

I have to wash my hair with shampoo, but I only use water to wash my face. Face-wash/soap either makes me break out or makes my skin dry. Since I stopped using surfactants on my face, my skin has never looked better. The proof is in the pudding, do what works for you, not what's supposed to work.

You could try shampooing only some days, or using a very mild shampoo, baby shampoo, or the baking soda/apple vinegar thing.
If you really don't get greasy or dirty hair without shampoo, just quit. It's full of chemicals, anyway.

you're not supposed to wash your hair every day or even every other day depending on the hair texture and how oily it gets. too much oil in your hair makes it feel gross and makes it smell. sleeping in your bed with oily hair gets oil on the pillows and makes you prone to waking up with zits in the morning and dirties your bed sheets quicker. but washing your hair too often does dry it out. washing your hair every day doesn't give your skin enough time to moisturize itself and leads to hair loss and dandruff.
it's normal to just rinse your hair out from time to time without using soap, but do be sure to use soap at least once every three days or so depending on how oily your hair gets.

I do what thegypsysailor does. Not washing it whatsoever is gross and shines a bad light on the person's hygiene.

Yep, shampoo damages hair. There's a movement to quit shampoo and use baking soda and apple cider vinegar in its place. A quick Google search should get you the instructions. I'm interested in what would happen if someone didn't treat their hair at all. It seems to be unheard of.

I use a cheap knock off of Wen cleansing conditioner that I buy a Sally's Beauty Supply called Hair One, and my hair is clean and soft.
    :-)

I have been told that using shampoo too often on your hair can strip it of necessary nutrients. But never using shampoo will probably allow a build up of oil and dirt.
You'd probably be better off with a combination of some days shampooing and some days not.
