Is it normal to pull out your phone when you feel anxious?

Anytime I'm in a social setting and I feel like I'm not doing anything I'll pull out my phone. I don't want to stand around and look like I'm not doing anything. I just pretend to look at my phone to ease the anxiety. I see others do the same thing. Is this normal?

Perfectly normal anxiety reflex. I used to do that with cigarettes when I was a smoker. Using the phone is a lot healthier for everybody.

It's an escape mechanism. I'm sure lots of people do it.

Some people may interpret that as rude, as they may feel that you are not paying adequate attention to the people around you (of course, that depends on the social setting we're talking about; at a bar or something, that might be okay). I like to sit around with a serious look on my face as though I'm contemplating some weighty matter, like what my cat would look like in a tuxedo.

Cats tend to look GREAT in tuxedos! I honestly think tabby cats look pretty cool dressed up as Mexican bandits. I would really like to dress my Siamese cat up as a sheriff! ☆☆☆

I think my fat cat would look like Luciano Pavarotti in a tuxedo. Or maybe Caruso.

I used to do that "serious look" a lot in social settings because I felt so uncomfortable being there and I thought my serious look made me look like I was above all that superficiality.
