Is it normal to read a book for the setting rather than the actual story?

There are a few books that I read with really awful story lines but they have really nice settings. I like the way the author describes these places. Is it normal to read certain books just for their settings or is that weird? Do any of you do this?

I totally do this--especially when it's set in place like New York or the British Isles. Some people read books to live out the life of the main character & an aspect of the main character's life is where they live. So if what you're craving is to feel like you live in a certain area, then it makes total sense. Though...I always try my best to choose a book for both the setting *and* the plot, simply so I don't feel like I kind of wasted my time after I read it ;)

Green Angel and Green Witch by Alice Hoffman is a great story line and beautiful setting.

  • I do that too, I like to read about how normal people lived in different places and time periods, and the more detailed the better. Its interesting.
