Is it normal to recognize each family member by their footsteps?

for example, I can know if my mum is coming, or where she's going, just by the sound and rhythm of her footsteps. can other people do this?

    My cat stomps around the house nice, and loud every couple of hours like he's doing his security rounds, or something.
