Is it normal to sign up people i don't like for spam email lists?

When I was in college in the late 90s, my roommate would visit websites and would submit the email address of a previous roommate, Kurt, to sign him up for email lists.

My roommate had lived with Kurt the previous year and had changed many of the sounds settings on Kurt's computer from the default sounds to instead make belch and fart sounds. Kurt was upset about this and it led to a falling out.

So my new roommate continued harassing Kurt the next year. He signed up Kurt for several gay-related email lists and even created a profile page for Kurt on a gay dating website.

Is it normal to harass someone by signing them up for spam email lists?

  • I am a bit more mature and probably wouldn't do this today. But I think it was about 15 years ago or so. I had a disagreement with someone I did a contract job with who didn't pay me correctly. He wasn't counting things he should have and he paid me about $100 short. The amount was so small that it wasn't worth the time and fees of small claims court, plus proving that I had actually done the extra tasks would have been impossible. He knew this and no longer needed me so he decided it would be a good idea to screw me.

So I used his phone number and email address along with some random photo off the internet of some shirtless teen and posted ads in the man for man section of Craigslist using his first name and saying that he was a 19 year old boy looking for a much older daddy to take his virginity and teach him about sex. I did this for about a week or so, and he was so popular he ended up having to change his email address and his phone number.

It's illegal to do that sort of thing now in a lot of places, but at that time the law hadn't caught up with the technology so there was no reason to even attempt to trace it back to me, no one would have cared. I also think Craigslist has changed a lot about how they list personal information and verification for these types of ads, so this might be slightly more complicated today. But that the time, it took 3 min a day and his inconvenience of constantly receiving calls and having to change his number felt well worth it.

      That is hilarious!

I stopped talking to Kurt, so I don't know what he thought about the influx of email messages from gay email lists. My newer roommate signed up Kurt for a bunch of gay porn web sites, so Kurt must have been receiving lots of hardcore gay emails!

People like the guy who screwed you need a date with piano wire and then a long nap in a hole in the desert.

That's pretty funny stuff on both sides. When I get robo calls to my cell phone many times I'll wait for someone to answer and belch repeatedly into the phone.

Sure. Nasty people at the office are always getting literature about nude cruises, mail order dildos, and fan club mail about pornographic film stars.

So what was so terrible about Kurt as to merit such vigorous harassment?

Kurt was actually kind of a dick. When my newer roommate and Kurt were roommates, Kurt tried to sabotage a relationship the newer roommate had with a girl and told her a bunch of lies about him. Kurt totally deserved the harassment!

Reminds me of GTA 2 which is probably where he got the belch and fart noise idea. That's a hilarious joke to play on a poor computer illiterate technologically disinclined noob
