Is it normal to think minorities get accepted over me

I get so mad when people only get accepted to things because thy are diverse. I'm a middle class Irish descended white girl. It makes me so mad that people who don't do half the stuff I do with half the grades I have get accepted to things over me because they're diverse. Doing this only creates more of an emphasis on social differences. If you want to be equal you shouldn't get special treatment because your race wasn't treated fairly somewhere in history. If you're gonna be equal be equal and that's it. Why shod diversity matter in a school or job? Everyone's different so everyone's diverse. It's not fair. is it normal I get pissed about this or am I just a dick?

Yeah, Normal. I'm a half-black male that was accepted to a well known university in the midwest. I was accepted on academic performance (28 ACT/ 3.9 unweighted GPA). I accepted a 'diversity' scholarship at said school to help with financing said school choice hoping to meet like minded smart and diverse individuals through the required meetings for the scholarship. I was sooooo wrong, the 'diverse' people looked like they had been picked up off the street, loud, and ill mannered and the meetings were about how to send an email to your professor and not using text language and addressing your superiors properly and proper attire for formal gatherings (really?!). In short, I totally agree with you OP! Totally normal. I think such things should be based on skills and performance, not color of skin or heritage.

The idea that you can defeat discrimination with discrimination has got to be one of the stupidest ideas ever devised.

I think if they have to do this affirmative action thing, it should be based on economic conditions not on skin color.
Imagine if a rich black person that went to a private school and had private tutors gets into an academic program as a diversity candidate over someone who was white and grew up to a single mother in a trailer park but managed to get better grades. That wouldn't make any sense.

I'm not sure I would agree with them doing it off of economic conditions but at least it would make sense then. If you overcome poverty black or white, you achieved something even if you didn't get quite as good grades as someone from a better background. Whereas just being black or white shouldn't mean anything.

In short, affirmative action as it is currently practiced is a racist concept at its core. It assumes that every minority person needs the help just based off of the color of their skin and that no white person does.

The 'Diverse' as you call them were probably able to spell correctly, especially when stating how much more qualified they are than others. Are you sure they did not pick you because you are the kind of thicko that will blame anyone for their short fallings rather than addressing their own failings, such as filling in forms correctly and learning to spell,if you are sec/gen Irish then who the fuck are you calling diverse you mick bastard? And by the way you are an embarrassment to us you bigot.

Or maybe I shortened a few words because I was in a rush to get to my student government meeting where we planned our next community service trip. But hey I'll just keep blaming others for my short "fallings"

No no i agree with you.

When a woman falls down and cries because she hurt her bottom people are sympathetic.

If i fall down being a man and cry because my bottom hurts people think i am pathetic?

    Where is the equality people?

Stick that up your feminist jumper.

    It's called reverse discrimination.

The answer to all of this is very simple but there are people in the world who don't want genuine equality. All the American states had to do was ensure that every kid (black, white and blue) got to go to a good school. In their last year of high school, the kids should get to apply to ten colleges each, through a single application system (similar to the UK's UCAS). After they sat a common set of exams, the ones who got the highest marks should be guaranteed a place at their first choice. Personally I think there are now too many students, too many courses, too many colleges and universities. University should be for academically able people.

It's true, minorities do get accepted over majorities (is that the word?)

You're not alone! I know this one girl (who is white) who applied for scholarships to all these different schools while her best friend (who is black, by the way) did the same thing. The second girl's mom helped the first girl and her mom apply for scholarships and financial aid. In the long run, the second girl got a scholarship to the school she wanted while the first girl is having to depend on loans and grants for college. You gotta love reverse discrimination. People of all races, whether white, black, Hispanic, Oriental, or Native American should be treated fairly and given the same chances.

I'm mexican and just got accepted to well-respected university in Chicago. U mad bro? Just kidding:) I understand how the post creator feels. It sucks for me too. I moved from the ghetto (Mexican neighborhood) to a suburb that at the time almost all white. I was put in an ESL program In elementary school eventhough i knew English better than Spanish. I didn't learn shit and this ESL program took me out of class for a good portion so my test scores, reading level, mathematics level, etc. were BELOW AVERAGE!!!! Even now my reading skills aren't that good because of the ESL program I was in it for 5 YEARS!!!! That reverse discrimination made me struggle in elementary school and hurt me, NOT HELP ME!!!

Yes I also found this annoying. Why should people be only given a change thanks to race.

Yes this is totally normal. Everyone should be equal and no one should be preferred over someone else due to superficial things like race or gender. But society likes to complicate things and colleges feel that affirmative action allows minorities greater opportunities to attain financial success in the future. It's a foolhardy attempt to reverse the long standing social and economic inequities that have plagued minorities. Affirmative action is well intentioned but poorly executed. You have every right to maintain your dignity as a human being and individual and proclaim that you are just as diverse as anyone else. Martin Luther King Jr said, "I have a dream my children will grow up in a country where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character". We have desecrated his sentiments. Same thing with feminists, they don't want equality, they want to feel superior to men. We cannot let these injustices continue
