Is it normal to think that my general doctor is also a psychologist?

He's just a general doctor and does routine check ups but I also feel like he's secretly a psychologist and can read my mind.

Do you think psychologists can read minds?!

Doctors are trained to "read between the lines" when a patient tells them stuff. They know some people don't tell the whole story for whatever reason.

Any doctor worth a damn understands the connection between the mind and body. Even broken bones heal quicker with the help of a healthy mind set.
Perhaps you've found yourself one of the few good ones out there these days; hang onto him if he is.

A healthy mind set helps broken bones heal faster? References please, I don't believe it

My father was an orthopedic surgeon for 50 some odd years. This was part of his healing philosophy. He even used placebos to great effect.
But think about it. If you are well mentally and thinking positively don't you think that you would heal better than if one was say, deeply depressed? Just common sense to me.
Since I haven't the tiniest bit of believe in divine intervention, then all those 'miracle cures' must have come from within, don't you think?

Hmmmm maybe you're right, but personally I think a lot of "miracle cures" are spontaneous recoveries for reasons we don't understand. Placebos certainly work in controlled research studies but I don't imagine your father was doing that, was he?

I guess I have somewhat of a reaction against the whole "mind over matter" stuff about illness, esp quacks like Louise L Hay who postulates an emotional/spiritual cause for every single illess - only one example, HIV/AIDS is caused by sexual guilt. Yeah right, that's why it was so rife in the Victorian era.

I agree a positive attitude helps in that one is more likely to take care of oneself, exercise, eat healthily etc, but I think any improvement in health is a result of actions taken BECAUSE of the positive attitude, not the attitude itself.

Anyway, I guess it doesn't really matter because a positive attitude makes life more bearable, even if one is really ill. I struggle with this all the time and every now and then sink into depression I have to climb out of again: I just get tired of the struggle

One of the things I got from LSD was the intense feeling that the only reason we even had bodies, was so that our minds can exist.
Though I've never heard of Louise L Hay, from what you say, she's just a tea party nut job. But I sincerely believe our minds can use the body to cure just about any ailment.
It's just we haven't learned how yet, or we have lost the ability to, control this. Sometimes it does happen, but almost accidentally, it seems at this point.

I've never used LSD but I came to the same conclusion years ago.

Louise L Hay is a very rich & very successful rip off merchant, who wrote a book called "You Can Heal Your Life" and convinced lots of gullible people they didn't need medical treatment because they could heal themselves by the power of thought alone. Lots of people died, racked with guilt that they hadn't "done it" properly or they could've healed themselves.

Until I'm convinced we can do what you suggest is possible, I'll stick pretty much with science on medical matters, albeit with a lot of scepticism about the pharmaceutical industry. Certainly I believe there's a mind body connection, that's inarguable, but I do not believe our minds can cure as widely as you suggest.

It doesn't matter how positive I am, emphysema just isn't curable, although I have learned how to manage it. On the other hand, exercise and meditation has got my blood pressure way down compared to before. In relation to the emphysema, if I'd used my mind more consistently to cure my nicotine addiction I wouldn't have developed emphysema in the first place, but I don't think that's what you mean.
