I grew up in the 80s and remember watching the Monkees on tv. I really didn't hear of the Beatles until later in my teens and automatically assumed that the Monkees came first and were kind of a Beatles parody. It took a while to convince me of this? Anybody else?

No, I can't relate. Sorry about that. I always knew that the Beatles came before the Monkeys.
Like it has already been said. The Beatles were first. They didn't copy the Monkeys. However, The Monkeys sold more records than the Beatles and Elvis combined. I happen to like the Monkeys and watched the show every week when it was on.
The Beatles were a band, playing gigs, writing songs, and doing what bands do, before they became famous.
The Monkees were a fabrication for a TV show, with a team of established hit-writers and session musicians making the music.
I've always loved the Monkees but don't forget what they were.
