Is it normal to think ugly people are wasting time at the gym

So my friend and I were having a debate today. I said how I thought it was a waste of time for ugly people to go to the gym as no matter how much time they spend in the gym, they will never be attractive. My friend's rebuttal was that not everybody goes to the gym to look better. She says some people do it for the movement. Am I the only one who thinks it's waste of time for ugly people to go to the gym?? Is this normal?

You're obviously a person that see's the gym as a meat market.

Not all people that go to a gym are there for other people's opinions.

CK444 said it, there are many reasons. A lot of sports people work out every day but not all sports people are attractive. Many people go to the gym for the physical fitness aspect or for health reasons.

There is an old saying that beauty is only skin deep but ugly goes all the way to the bone.

Judging people based on appearance, of whether they should go to the gym or not may make you the 'ugly one'.

    • I actually don't use the gym as a meat market. I prefer to exercise by myself and actually do so at the gym in my condo. I just get irritated when other people are in there with me and I realized that they were ugly and I didn't really feel a point in them using the gym because of it.

Well, the gym is not your personal private gym and you're not any more entitled to be there than they are. If it bothers you so much, find a way to work out in your condo. If not, then you simply have to weigh the costs and benefits of sharing it with other people.

Okay, so here's the problem. Not everyone goes to the gym to look attractive. Some go to get in shape. Getting in shape might make you more physically attractive but being unhealthy is bad for your health in general.

What do you mean by ugly? Like their faces? People's body add's or detracts from their overall appearance. People work out for hundreds reasons ie: get fit, stay fit, stress relief, self esteem, to be healthy, to train for marathons, improve their mental health, to name a few

Going to the gym usually gets you less ugly though. If you have a ugly face but a great body atleast you have a great body which is equivalent of being fat with great face

If their ugly, that can't try to be healthy?

No, I don't think it's a waste of time. Working out is good for health and and contributes to living longer. Usually if an ugly fat person loses weight, they look much better. Being fit and ugly is better than being fat and ugly. If you can't have something, own the next best thing.

Three main problems with your thinking:

    1) Gyms are not just about looks. They are about health. They are about strength. They are about fun. They are about training. They are about competition. They are about feeling good. They are about a number of different things.

    2) Even if someone is “ugly,” wouldn’t they want to be “less ugly”?

    3) Ugliness is subjective.

It's one thing to be naturally ugly. Pitiful bastards. It's a different issue when they are just overweight or obese.

I think if people could see what they looked like/ felt like if they were a healthy size that would encourage way more people to start being healthier.

Dropping the pounds does wonders to the face. That's why I mostly look out for bone structure. That ain't going to change, the amount of fat in the face? That can change.

    • That's exactly what I mean! People who are ugly because of their face need not bother going to the gym because even when thin they are ugly! It's pointless.

Theres a good reason to go to the gym dispite being ugly though. To get fit.

On an airplane would you rather sit next to a thin ugly guy or a fat ugly guy?

Being in shape and staying healthy can not only ensure a better chance of longevity of life, but can make people feel better both mentally and physically. So someone who is naturally "ugly" shouldn't strive for those things?

Exactly, 90% of why I do any exercise is to balance my mental health being “in shape” is almost a side effect.

Same here! I just feel so much better when I exercise, and can definitely tell the difference when I lounge around and skip a day (or eat crap foods).

And who is to the judge of what is ugly?? You, me, the owner? Everybody idea of ugly is different and to segregate is prejudice, bias and very wrong. Everyone has the same rights and who are you or anyone to judge I am sure there are things about you others dont like so should you be banned?

It's not normal. Ugly people still can improve. Also doing something to gain more health isnt too bad too.

It wasn't really meant seriously, but when I think about it, there are also men who insinuate that other men have a small dick and then end up having a micropenis themselves. So this is also possible without further knowledge about OP.

So? That doesn't mean it goes for everyone else. Because there are a bunch of people that are ugly and go around calling other people ugly, doesn't mean every single person that calls someone ugly is ugly also. That does not make any sense.

I didn't say that. I said it isn't impossible and that is true. How am I supposed to know if they are or aren't ugly? Just because they say ugly people shouldn't work out it doesn't mean they are pretty nor does it mean that they are not, it could be either way.
Still calling people ugly and telling them not to go for a work-out isn't really smart as what one thinks is ugly others might find to be pretty. It's pretty subjective. So if everyone would think so and everyone would act on that everyone would be fat and unhealthy.
