Is it normal to wanna hold other students under water 'til the bubbles stop?

JK, of course... But seriously, this high school senior just visited our campus and ALL she could talk about was how EXPENSIVE her dream school is. She wants to go to Columbia and she spent the whole afternoon with me and a bunch of other girls complaining about how expensive it is.

I'm like, well, if I value a Mercedes Benz above a perfectly fine Toyota/Ford/Honda... then I'd have to be prepared to pay for the premium. I don't need a MB to survive, and no one NEEDS an "elite" private education to survive, either.

I get that college tuition in the US is absurd, and only getting more so. And I've been following the movement among college grads to reform loan-forgiveness programs, which I was all for last year. But colleges are so damn expensive at least in part because so many families and kids are willing to pay for the privilege of attending university X which they think will bring them prestige. So much of this problem is our own damn fault. If most of us said NO to ridiculously priced colleges, they'd have little choice but to lower their tuitions.

But I don't see that happening.

Maybe she's just bragging. Ignore her if you can. I really don't care about what kinda university another person goes to as long as that person is a decent, intelligent individual. However, I really do despise braggarts, but I also despise people who act jealous as well; either way both types of people are insufferable bores who are not worthy of attention.

You will probly get the last laugh as the cost of Columbia is the easiest part. Money is something you can get but a high GPA high SAT and extracurricular activites you have to actually achieve. And for activies I don't mean ON the school paper yoy need to be the editor. Same with anything else you do. The acceptance rate at Columbia is 7%. So you need to be in that 7% before you even worry about the cost.

Again, I don't know why you got so many down-votes. I think she has a shot at Columbia, and I'm not jealous of the kid. If that's where she wants to go, more power to her. I think we have a far better engineering program, but hey. My beef is with people who complain about how expensive "exclusive" things are, but then pay for them. If we pay, THEY have no incentive to lower their prices.

Being from Cal, I think the same thing about rental prices in San Francisco (and other big coastal cities). Why the hell would a mid-wage earner pay $4500/month for a tiny one-bedroom apt? (Rhetorical) Pay it and the landlords have no incentive to lower rents.
